and Responsibility
Module Learning Outcomes
The PSSDR module is designed to provide you with an
opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of the following
module learning outcomes:
1) Demonstrate effective communication skills, applicable to
academic and professional contexts.
2) Work effectively with others in the delivery of a group project
3) Identify own academic and professional development needs
and create an action plan.
4) Demonstrate an awareness of the global context of higher
education and employment.
Requirements / Expectations
All students are required or expected to:
① Be punctual (on time) for their lessons.
② Prepare themselves and participate in lessons (by reading relevant
material beforehand).
③ Avoid talking over anyone who is already speaking.
④ Keep their mobile phones switched off during lessons.
⑤ Raise their hand if they have a question or comment.
⑥ Ask for help and/or support if they need any.
⑦ Learn the basic skills needed for success in academic work, such as
[finding your way on the computer, doing basic research, referencing sources of information, etc.]
⑧ Respect themselves and others.

never leave assignments to the last minute!
▪ What would you like to improve in your approach to your
studies that you believe will help you with your learning?

Overview of this module
Objectives of today’s lecture:
At the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:
1) Explain how the PSSDR module is organised.

2) Define and briefly explain the concept of self-development, and how self-
development can support a student’s personal and professional development.

3) Identify areas of personal and professional development that they wish to


focus on in terms of self-development in their academic journey.

4) Identify and appreciate some developmental strategies that they can apply in
their studies.
Contents of this module
You will learn about the followings;
Communication for academic and professional contexts – e.g. writing skills, presentation skills
Reading skills
Task and time management skills
 Teamwork and group work 
Interpersonal skills
Negotiating skills
Self-efficacy
Effective presentation of oneself (e.g., CV writing, interviews, using social media) 
Taking responsibility for personal and professional development
Global citizenship
Making effective use of feedback
Academic and professional integrity
Preparing for further study – identifying existing skills, goal-setting and action planning
Numeracy – working with numbers, percentages, fractions, conversions, mental maths.
Organisation of this module

activities as well as group-work.

Self-development strategies / approaches

• Plan: Set goals and have clear objectives as to what you wish to
achieve.
• Document: Take notes during lessons to remember what you
have learnt. This also helps you when you draft your Assignment.
• Implement (start small, do what you can, take responsibility for
your own success and progress).
• Evaluate: check out what you have learnt or done well; and take
note of things you still need to learn or do.

As a student to be self-responsible you need to do the following:

▪ Be diligent.
▪ Persevere.
▪ Use self-control.
▪ Be self-disciplined.
▪ Think before you act.
▪ Be accountable for your words, actions and attitudes.
▪ Set a good example for others.
▪ Choose a positive attitude.
▪ Make healthy choices.
Assessment for this module
Two elements / sections / aspects of this module:

1. Group Presentation

and

2. Portfolio.
Part 1: Oral (Group) Presentation (PR1)
▪ This assignment is worth 40% and presentations will take place in
Week 6 .

The following Learning Outcomes must be achieved:


▪ LO1: Demonstrate effective communication skills, applicable to
academic and professional contexts.
▪ LO2: Work effectively with others in the delivery of a group project.

▪ Together with your Group members, you need to undertake a
Group Project and deliver a 15-minute Group Presentation on
the subject of “How to be an effective student”.

Assessment Criteria:
▪ Information Presentation 30%.
▪ Analysis and Criticality 35%.
▪ Written Communication 35%.
PR1 Continued…
You and your Group members are required to assess or focus on
the following aspects:
▪ Communication skills (verbal and written).
▪ Time management
▪ Planning.
▪ Evaluation .
▪ Reflection – look at factors which are challenging (e.g., always
arriving late for lessons); and 
▪ Any other(s).
PR1 Task Requirements
▪ Written work submitted as part of this assignment should be presented in
Arial 20, 1.5 line spacing
▪ Each member of the group is required to submit their group’s slides via
the submission point for PR1 on LSST CONNECT.
▪ Group slides that are submitted must be identical for all Group
members.
▪ Any member of the group who amends or changes their slide(s) must
notify other members of the Group about such changes.
▪ Any secondary sources used should be listed in a Reference List using
Harvard Referencing System.
Part 2: Coursework 1:
Portfolio and Reflective Summary
▪ Coursework 1 is known as a PORTFOLIO.
▪ The minimum word limit for the Portfolio is 2000 words, and is worth 60%
▪ This assignment must be submitted on LSST Connect in Week 14 of the Term.
The following Learning Outcomes must be achieved:

▪ LO1: Demonstrate effective communication skills, applicable to academic and


professional contexts.

▪ LO3: Identify own academic and professional development needs and create an Action
Plan.

▪ LO4: Demonstrate an awareness of the global context of higher education and


employment.
CW1 Continued…
What will the portfolio consist of? (a minimum of 12 documents is
suggested).

These will be materials generated from FY027 mini workshops:


▪ Reading logs associated with workshops.
▪ Photographs of work completed in class or typed up work.
▪ An up-to-date CV.
▪ Action Plan.
▪ Examples of academic writing.
▪ Including any material uploaded as part of the Portfolio must amount to
minimum of 2000 words.
Example of a CW1 Structure

▪ 500-word summary: How and why have the mini project workshops
contributed towards your personal development? (reflection on how it
meets the LO’s).

▪ Reading logs associated with the workshops. 

▪ Photographs of work completed in class or typed up work. 

▪ An up-to-date CV.

▪ Action plan.
CW1 Task Requirements

▪ Written work submitted as part of this assignment should be


presented in Arial 12, 1.5 line spacing.
▪ Reference your work according to the Harvard Referencing System.

▪ Your Assignment must be uploaded on LSST Connect by the date

mentioned in Module Handbook.


WORKSHOP
▪ Develop a chart (list) of all your strengths (your abilities
and what you are good at).
▪ Develop a chart of all your limitations or weaknesses
(i.e., things you need to improve to achieve success in
your studies).
▪ Tutorials delivered will include ways of developing an
Action Plan based on the identified areas for
improvement.
▪ They also include an understanding of SWOT Analysis.
