Energy audit of compressed air distribution system

Compressed air system energy audit is an accurate process

undertaken to identify areas of loss or inefficiencies within a
compressed air system.
Skilled energy audit engineers perform compressed air
system energy audits with expertise in identifying and
modifying faults and disorders.
A compressed air system audit is the way to determine how
much of output is wasted.
It is an effective way to identify the current erergy use and
to asses your compressed air needs.

When compressed air installations are not optimized:-

it often results in unnecessary increases in operational cost
due to energy wastage and underutilization.
 A compressed air system audit, either done in-house or by
an independent third party.
is an accurate analysis process to get an up to date picture of
your compressed air system, to identify areas of energy loss
or inefficiencies within the system.

Audit instruments

A comprehensive range of equipment required for an air audit

exercise:
Dew point meter
Particle counter
Oil vapor measurement
Flow meter
Pressure meter
Differential pressure meter
Leak detector
Energy meter

Dew point meter

 A dew point meter is used in compressed air systems to ensure the air
quality which is used in the production and throughout all the processes
in a factory.
 Not only protecting equipment and keeping the air quality at a certain
level, but also for air quality audits according to ISO 8573-1 and ISO
8573-3 a dew point meter is absolutely necessary.
 A dew point meter typically outputs the pressure dew point of the
compressed air, besides that humidity and temperature are measured as
well.

Particle counter

A frequently used method is to employ laser particle sensors

to measure an air stream directly and this can give both
accurate and fast results.
Laser particle sensors can be permanently mounted for
continuous monitoring or used as portable test instruments
for plant audits and quality verification.

05/12/2023 6
Oil vapor measurement

It is an instrument used to know oil limit in air.

Measuring the oil vapour concentration can be achieved
through laboratory analysis of samples that have been taken
at suitable test points.
The process of using gas chromatography to analyse the
sample while accurate is also expensive, time consuming
and doesn't allow instant results for the test engineer.

Flow meter
Compressed air flow measurement using air flow meters is
recognized as a method to identify air leaks which
significantly saves money and conserves energy.
Compressed air flow monitoring systems are increasingly
being used to identify excessive compressed air usage and
help identify leaks.

05/12/2023 8
Differential pressure meter

Differential pressure is an indication of air quality.

A differential pressure gauge is an instrument that is used to
measure the differential pressure in a system and display the
results visually.
It can monitor the status of the air filter, which is an integral
part of most compressed air systems.

05/12/2023 9
Leakage detector
 Since air leaks are almost impossible to see, other methods must be used
to locate them.
 The best way to detect leaks is to use an ultrasonic acoustic detector,
which can recognize the high frequency hissing sounds associated with
air leaks
 These portable units consist of directional microphones, amplifiers, and
audio filters, and usually have either visual indicators or earphones to
detect leaks.

Pressure meter

Air pressure gauges measure the pressure of air in a

pneumatic system.
The measurement of air pressure is essential for the proper
functioning of many systems and can be used to monitor and
control the performance of compressors, pneumatic systems,
and other equipment that utilizes air.
They are applicable in a wide range of industries, including
automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing.

Generalizations and suggestion
Conduct a Site Survey
It is important to list and understand all the equipment in
a compressed air system before installing any
measurement devices so that
the devices are properly placed, and
system dynamics are properly understood.
The person responsible for collecting information should note:
environmental conditions, physical layout, details on all air
system components including clean air treatment, piping,
storage and controls. Processes at the facility should also be
documented. Many auditors will have a questionnaire which
they will complete to compile the details into one document.

Understand the System Dynamics
The system information collected should be thoroughly
analyzed and areas of improvement should be identified.
Multiple scenarios should be considered to lower the
compressed air system’s energy consumption, including an
analysis of the major compressed air users within the facility
to determine whether compressed air is the most efficient
option for each application.
