CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM TO MANAGE

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
BY:- Syed Talha Ahmad
• UN-run carbon emission offset scheme to fund greenhouse gas
emission projects
• One of the three flexible mechanisms mentioned Kyoto Protocol
OBJECTIVES
• Assist non-Annex-1 countries (predominantly developing countries) to
achieve sustainable development and reduce their carbon footprint
• Assist Annex-1 countries (predominantly industrialized countries) to
achieve their committed carbon reductions
MECHANISM
• An industrialized country that wishes to get credits from a CDM project must
obtain the consent of the developing country hosting the project and their
agreement that the project will contribute to sustainable development
• Using methodologies approved by the CDM Executive Board, the applicant
industrialized country must make the case that the carbon project would not
have happened anyway and must establish a baseline estimating the future
emissions in absence of the registered project.
• The EB then decides whether or not to register (approve) the project. If a project
is registered and implemented, the EB issues credits, called carbon credits
BENIFITS
• Carbon footprint reduction in developing countries along with the
development
• The advancement of the world in green energy and environment-
friendly industrialization
• CDM credits would also facilitate developed countries to move toward
reducing carbon emissions
