TESTING
INTRODUCTION
TESTING
WHAT IS SYSTEM TESTING?

• System Testing is one type of Functional Testing.

• Functional Testing is a type of software testing that validates the software
system against the functional requirements/specifications.
• System Testing is a black box testing technique performed to evaluate the
complete system the system's compliance against specified requirements.
WHAT IS FAULT DETECTION?

• Fault detection is referring to testing which will discover failure (s) in hardware or software.
POWER ON SELF TEST (POST) is one example of fault detection system testing.
It is a diagnostic testing sequence run by a computers BIOS as the computers power is
initially turned on.
It will determine if the computers RAM, disk drives, peripheral devices and
other hardware components are properly working. If the diagnostic determines that
everything is in working order, the computer will continue to boot.
• A computer that fails the POST has hardware trouble.
WHAT IS FAULT DETECTION?

• If a computer fails the POST, PC will show that the computer has hardware
trouble.
Note:
1. However, different computer brand/ motherboard may have different POST
error beep codes & description / colored lights & description.
2. For example: in Award BIOS beep code, beeps repeating endlessly indicate
RAM failure. While in Dell beep code, 4 beeps indicate RAM failure.
FAULT DETECTIOH - HARDWARE FAILURES

• There are a variety of POST "beep codes“:

• Steady, short beeps - The power supply may be bad.
• Long continuous beep tone - Memory failure. This is usually when one or all of Random Access Memory
(RAM) sticks goes bad. If there is more than one stick installed, try taking one out first to see if the
computer boots, if it does not, try with the other one. Usually, this will tell you which stick has gone bad,
and you can replace or upgrade accordingly. If there is only one stick installed, you will need to replace
or upgrade to fix the problem.
• Steady, long beeps - This is another POST code that noted a bad power supply. The difference is, while
the “steady, short beeps” code notes that the power supply may be bad, this POST code notes that is
has gone bad.
FAULT DETECTIOH - HARDWARE FAILURES

• There are a variety of POST "beep codes“:

• One long, two short beeps - This POST code means that there has been a
video card failure. The first action should be to try reseating the video card, if
any. This can sometimes solve the problem all together as some computer
systems, especially those that are often connected to projectors, will move
the VGA/DVI/Video cable so often, that it will actually slowly unplug the
video card enough to stop working. If reseating the video card does not
work, it may need to be replaced.
