causes a range of developmental problems
including learning disabilities and cognitive
impairment. Usually, males are more severely
affected by this disorder than females. Affected
individuals usually have delayed development of
speech and language by age 2
B. The etiology of a disease is its cause or origin.
Etiology is also the name for the study of the
causes of diseases. It can also refer to the study of
the cause of things in other fields, such as
philosophy and physics. But it is most commonly
used in the context of medicine.
C. Fragile X syndrome occurs in about 1 in 4000
males and 1 in 8000 females. The exact frequency
is, however, unknown. Female carrier status is
estimated to be as high as 1 in 130 to 250, and the
incidence of male carriers is about 1 in 250 to 800
population. Life expectancy is lower than in the
general population.
D. There is no cure for FXS. However,
treatment services can help people learn
important skills. Services can include
therapy to learn to talk, walk, and interact
with others. In addition, medicine can be
used to help control some issues, such as
behavior problems.
E. Early intervention includes therapies,
education and other supports that will help

intervention should also include helping
you learn how to spend time with your child
in ways that support their development.
