INTRODUCTION
 About Pharmacology

 About Pharmacon

 About Secondary Metabolites

 About Sesquiterpene Lactone

2
CLASSES OF SESQUITERPENE
LACTONE

 Eudesmanolides
 Heliangolides

 Guaianalides

 Germacranolides

 Pseudoguaianalides (Janeeka et al., 2012)

SESQUITERPENE LACTONES

4
STRUCTURES CONT’D

5
TYPES OF SESQUITERPENE LACTONE
FROM THREE DIFFERENT PLANTS

 Vernolidefrom Vernonia amygdalina Del.

(Asteraceae)

 Artemisinin from Artemisia annua L.

 Parthenolide from Tanacetum

parthenium

6
VERNOLIDE

 Thiscompound is mostly found in the

plants of genus vernonia.

7
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF
VERNOLIDE

 Insect antifeedant
 Anti-tumoral activity

 Cytotoxic activity
 Anti-fungal activity (Wedge et al., 2000)

8
ARTEMISININ

 Artemisinin is isolated from the plant Artemisia

annua. L.

 Chemically, artemisinin contain an unusual

peroxide bridge.

 This endoperoxide 1,2,4-trioxane ring is

responsible for the drug mechanism of action
( Brown 2006).
9
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF
ARTEMISININ
 Anti-malarial activity

 Anti-cancer activity

 Anthelminthic activity etc (WHO 2006)

10
PARTHENOLIDE

 This sesquiterpene lactone can be isolated

from the Tanacetum parthenium
(Feverfew).

 It is found in highest concentration in the

flower and fruits of plant (Long et al.,
2013).

11
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF
PHARTENOLIDE

 Anti-inflammatory effect

 Anti-hyperalgesic effect

 Anti-cancer activity (Long et al., 2013).

12
CONCLUSION

Conclusively, sesquiterpene lactones are composed of

three isoprene units that mostly found in the plants of
family (Asteraceae) and show antibacterial,
antimicrobial, antiviral, antiprotozoal, antifeedant,
cytotoxic activity, antidiabetic and anticancer activity
etc.

13
RECOMMANDATION

 Sesquiterpene lactones as a whole represent a large and

vastly important group of compounds, both to humans
and to the plants themselves. There is needs to be a
widening of public understanding of the importance of a
varied fruit and vegetable intake, and a better public
image for sesquiterpene lactone containing vegetables,
thereby increasing their consumption.
