BIOGEOCHEMICAL
CYCLES
 The cycle of nutrients in the biosphere is what we call the
biogeochemical cycle or also known as the Nutrient Cycle.

 Biogeochemical cycles important to living organisms include

the water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and oxygen cycles.
5 Key Elements of Life
These elements which keep our body running.

WATER A Vital element in our body. Sustaining the ecosystems on

which all life depends.

CARBON Carbon is the most important element to life. Without this

element, life as we know it would not exist. As you will see,
carbon is the central element in compounds necessary for life.

NITROGEN Nitrogen is needed for our DNA, RNA and proteins and is critical
to human agriculture.

PHOSPHORUS Without phosphorus photosynthesis could not occur.

OXYGEN Oxygen plays a critical role in respiration, the energy-producing

chemistry that drives the metabolisms of most living things.
WATER CYCLE
WATER CYCLE
 - The water cycle is the continuous movement of water
between Earth's surface and the air, changing from liquid to
gas to liquid.

 - The water cycle is the continuous movement of all this

water through Earth’s ecosystem.

 - To understand where fresh water resources come from, it is

necessary to explore the Water Cycle (also known as the
Hydrologic Cycle)

 - The water cycle is comprised of Evaporation,

Condensation, Precipitation, Run off, collection and
Transpiration.
EVAPORATION
The first step in the water cycle is known as
Evaporation. Evaporation is the process in which a
liquid changes into a gas. Evaporation is all caused
by the SUN heating water. Water that has been
evaporated is called water vapour. Water Vapour is
water in its gas state.
CONDENSATION
Condensation is the process in which a gas
changes into a liquid. Condensation happens when
water vapour in the air rises and cools. Causing the
water vapour to turn into water droplets ,which
ultimately forms clouds.
PRECIPITATION
Precipitation is any form of water particles that
falls to Earth. Precipitation occurs when the water
droplets in clouds become too heavy to stay in the
air. There are 4 types of precipitation. The
temperature determines what type of precipitation
will fall.
INFILTRATION
When water from a rainstorm or a period of
snowmelt reaches the ground, some or all of it will
infiltrate the soil. Water in excess of the infiltration
capacity of the soil will flow overland as surface
runoff once the minor undulations in the surface
(the depression storage) have been filled.
RUN-OFF
Run off is any water that flows downhill to a
stream, lake, or river. Run off is not the only thing
that happens to water that has fallen to the ground.
TRANSPIRATION
Major bodies of water are not the only source of
water vapor in the air. Plants also release water
into the atmosphere. This process is known was
Transpiration
WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT WATER CYCLE?

We care about the water cycle

because water is necessary for all Water is vital for life
living things.
IMPORTANCE OF WATER CYCLE:
• The hydrologic cycle is an essential biogeochemical
cycle on the earth for the maintenance of life.

•The hydrologic cycle plays an important role in

ensuring the availability of water for all living
organisms, including plants, animals, humans and
other living species.

•The hydrologic cycle is the greatest natural process

which plays a significant role in the continuous
movement of water on, above and below the surface
of the Earth
CARBON CYCLE
CARBON

 Carbon the building block of life

 Carbon atoms move constantly through living

organisms, the oceans, the atmosphere, and the
Earth’s crust in what is known as the carbon cycle.
WHAT IS CARBON
CYCLE?

 The carbon cycle is nature’s way of recycling

carbon atoms, which travel from the
atmosphere to life on Earth and back again

IMPORTANCE OF CARBON CYCLE:

If the carbon cycle is disrupted, major effects such as climate

shifts and global warming would occur. Carbon is needed for
all life on Earth to exist. Proteins, lipids, and DNA are all
examples of macromolecules. Carbon is the building block of
all known life on Earth. As a result, the carbon cycle, along
with the nitrogen and oxygen cycles, is essential to the existence
of life on Earth.
