VoLTE CALL FLOW

What is VOLTE?

Volte is voice over long term evolution that utilizes IMS technology, it
is a digital packet voice service delivered over IP via an LTE access
network.
• Provides more efficient use of spectrum than traditional Voice.
• Eliminates the need to have Voice on one network and data on another.
• Increases battery life .
• Provides a superior audio quality and a clearer calling experience.
IMS Registration

• The IMS Registration is the process in which the UE is connected to the

IMS network.
• It indicates whether you have VoLTE service is active or not.
• The main purpose of IMS is to provide quality of service to the mobile
users that frequently move across different access networks.

SIP

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol which is application-layer protocol used for
carrying out multimedia communication on the IP network.
The main functions of SIP are to establish, modify, and terminate multimedia sessions.
SIP messages-requests:
INVITE- Used to initiate a session.
ACK- Used to acknowledge the final response to an invite.
BYE- Terminates an established session.
CANCEL- Terminates a session which is not established.
OPTIONS- Requests information about availability and capabilities.
REGISTER- Registration of user agent.

SIP message responses:
1xx (Provisional/Informational responses ): Informational responses are used to indicate call progress.
Normally the responses are end to end (except 100 Trying).
2xx (Success response ):This class of responses is meant for indicating that a request has been
accepted.
3xx (Redirect responses ): Generally, these class responses are sent by redirect servers in response to
INVITE. They are also known as redirect class responses.
4xx (Client failure responses): Client error responses indicate that the request cannot be fulfilled as
some errors are identified from the UAC side.
5xx (Server failure response): This class response is used to indicate that the request cannot be
processed because of an error with the server.
6xx (Global failure response): This response class indicates that the server knows that the request will
fail wherever it is tried. As a result, the request should not be sent to other locations.
SIP Procedure

1. Call initiation and

processing
2. Call established
3. Call terminated
VoLTE Call flow

The VoLTE call flow is based on IMS framework which allows the service to
deliver multimedia as data flows using a common IP interface that can utilize
but does not depend on a legacy circuit-switched voice network.
For example, a user may initiate a call using the LTE network. However, if they
wander outside of an LTE coverage area, the call will go back to the legacy
network. This functionality is referred to as Single Radio Voice Call Continuity
(SR-VCC), where two connections are simultaneously maintained until the LTE
signal is lost.

Conclusion

• VoLTE enables simultaneous LTE data surfing and voice calls (i.e. do not fallback to
2G or 3G coverage while making a voice call).
• Faster call set-up times than in 2G/3G networks (around 1.5 sec in LTE vs around
3.5-5 seconds in 2G/3G) and also enables quicker availability to supplementary
services.
• The next generation voice codec technology, HD voice+ (3GPP standardized,
Evolved Voice Service (EVS)) provides users with even better voice quality than HD
voice. HD voice+ provides a significantly better voice quality in the entire LTE cell.
• Enable Wi-Fi calling to improve indoor voice coverage. Seamless voice handover
between LTE and Wi-Fi.
