branch pipes, fittings, valves and all appurtenances required for
the supply of potable water
Water Main
 Or street main
 Water-supply pipe for public or community use
Service Pipe
 The pipe from the street water main or other source of water supply to the
building served
Building Supply
 The pipe carrying potable water from the water meter or other source of
water supply to a building or other point of use or distribution on the lot.
 Shall also mean water service connection
House Water Supply
House Service
 Refers to the pipe connection from the public water main or
any source of water supply to the building served
The House Water Supply
The House Water Supply
MAIN – principal artery to which branches connect
WATER MAIN – main pipe/conduit; conveys water to service
connections
The House Water Supply
 CORPORATION COCK – (corporation stop); stop valve
placed in service pipe closed to connection with water main;
controls flow of water from main to a service pipe
The House Water Supply
 GOOSE NECK – a return bend; (one end – 30cm long; other
end – 7.5cm long); connection between service pipe and water
main
 Gooseneck – faucet for a
pantry sink
The House Water Supply
 CURB COCK–control valve; shuts off the water supply to a
building (emergency), installed in water service pipe (operated
by long key inserted through a curb box)
The House Water Supply
 SHUTOFF VALVE – shuts off flow of water from supply pipe
(gate valve)
The House Water Supply
 WATER METER – device for measuring/recording the
quantity of water
The House Water Supply
 WATER-DISTRIBUTING PIPE – conveys potable water from
building supply pipe to the plumbing fixtures/water outlets
Water-distributing pipe

*disregard dimensions Water
main
 RISER – a water supply pipe, which extends vertically to one
full storey or more to convey water into pipe branches or
plumbing fixtures
 BRANCH – any part of the piping system other than a main,
riser or stack
 FIXTURE BRANCH – the water supply pipe between the
fixture supply pipe and the water-distributing pipe
 FIXTURE SUPPLY – Water supply pipe connecting the fixture
with the fixture branch
Faucet
 A device for controlling flow of a liquid from pipe by
opening/closing an orifice
 A valve or pipe which water can be drawn

BIBB – synonymous with faucet, cock, tap, plug, etc.

SPIGOT – synonymous with faucet
FAUCETS: Compression Cock, Hose Bibb, Key Cock,
Self-Closing Faucet
 EFFECTIVE OPENING – minimum cross-sectional area at the
point of water supply discharge
 AIR GAP, water distribution – unobstructed vertical distance
through the free atmosphere between the lowest opening from
any pipe or faucet conveying potable water to the flood-level
rim of any tank, vat or fixture
 RIM – an unobstructed top open edge of a fixture
 FLOOD LEVEL – the level in which water begins to overflow
the top or rim of a fixture
 FLOOD LEVEL RIM – top edge of a receptacle
 FLOODED – when liquid rises to the flood level rim
Turbulence Flow Laminar Flow
 Fluid motion characterized  Fluid flows in parallel
by chaotic changes in layers, with no disruption
pressure and flow velocity between those layers
 When water flows in
different direction  Water flows in one direction
Noise in Plumbing System?
Water Hammering
 A trumbling sound/noise
Cause: Due to excessive water pressure

AIR CHAMBER – to remove severe noise due to the effect of

hammering
