SOLVING PROBLEMS
INVOLVING THEOREMS
ON TRAPEZOID
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, you should be able to:
a. Understand the properties of the trapezoid;
b. Solve problems involving trapezoid using the
properties; and
c. Apply the concept of trapezoid in real life
situation.
THEOREM OF TRAPEZOID
The median of a
trapezoid is parallel to
the bases and half the
sum of the lengths of
the bases.
If PQ is a median of trapezoid
ABCD, then AB PQ CD .
PQ= ½(AB +CD)
THEOREM OF ISOSCELES TRAPEZOID

Theorem 1: If
quadrilateral (with
one set of parallel
sides) is an
isosceles
trapezoid, its legs
are congruent.
THEOREM OF ISOSCELES TRAPEZOID

Theorem 2: If a
trapezoid has
congruent
diagonals, it is an
isosceles
trapezoid.
THEOREM OF ISOSCELES TRAPEZOID

Theorem 3:If a
trapezoid has its
opposite angles
supplementary, it
is an isosceles
trapezoid.
EXAMPLE 1:
Quadrilateral MATH is an isosceles trapezoid
with bases MA and HT, LV is a median.
Given: MA=3y-2
HT=2y+4
LV=8.5 cm
Questions:
a. What is the value of y?
b. How did you solve for y?
c. What are length of MA and HT?
EXAMPLE 1:
Step 1: Determine the
relationship base MA and
HT.
The median of a trapezoid
is parallel to the bases and
half the sum of the lengths
of the bases.
Hence, LV=1/2(MA+HT)
EXAMPLE 1:
Step 2: Substitute the expression of MA and
HT.
Then, solve for y.
8.5=1/2(3y-2+2y+4)
8.5=1/2(5y+2)
22
17=5y+2
17-2=5y
3=y
EXAMPLE 1:
What are MA and HT?
Substitute the value of y to the
given expression of MT.
MA=3y-2
MA= 3(3)-2
MA=9-2
MA=7cm

EXAMPLE 1:
What are MA and HT?
Substitute the value of y to the
given expression of HT.
HT=2y+4
HT=2(3)+4
HT=6+4
HT=10cm

EXAMPLE 2:
Given: HMA=115
Questions:
a. What is mTAM?
b. What theorem justifies your answer?
Determine the relationship of the base angles of
HMA and TAM.
The base angles of an isosceles trapezoid are
congruent.
Hence, mHMA mTAM
HMA=115 mTAM= 115
Activity 1: Let’s Try It!
Directions: Copy the problem and answer what is asked.
Quadrilateral ABCD is a trapezoid
with bases BC and AD, FE is a
median.
Questions:
a. What is the value of x?
b. How did you solve for x?
c. What are BC and FE?
Activity 1: Let’s Try It!
Answer: BASE
EF=1/2(BC+AD) BC=4x-10
5X-7=1/2(4x-10+38) BC=4(7)-10
BC=28-10 MEDIAN
10x-14=4x+28 BC=18  EF=5x-7
10x-4x=28+14 EF=5(7)-7
6x=42 EF=35-7
x=7 EF=28
