IPO CYCLE
Input – Process – Output cycle
(IPO cycle)
The computer is an electronic device capable of
solving problems by accepting data, preforming
operations on the data, and giving a result
Computer operates based on IPO cycle
Input is the raw data entered into the computer
using an input device e.g. Keyboard
Process is when the raw data is manipulated to generate
information
◦ Processing is done by Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Output is the generated information which is given out by
the output device e.g. Monitor, Printer etc.
The Input – Process – Output (IPO) cycle
Input , process and output are interrelated
The information flows from the input device to the processing
device and then to the output device.
The information may be stored in storage devices like Compact
disk, pen drive etc.
Activity
Think about the process of generating a timetable for your subjects.
What will be the input, processing and output
1.Input ……………………..
2.Processing
3.Output ……………………
Questions
List any 3 input devices
Which device process the data that are entered into the
computer?
List any 3 output devices
Computer Networks
MEANING AND ADVANTAGES
Networking Concept
Computer Networks
1.Computer network is a connection of two or several computers for
the purpose of sharing information and resources
2.Example ten computers can share one printer through a network is
an example of aresource sharing
3.Computers can be connected within a local area or may cross
different cities or countries
Advantages of networking
1. Limited resources: One printer can be share by several computes,
no need to connect a printer in each computer
2. Sharing information: Data and information e.g. files can be
shared.
3. Lower costs: It reduces the cost of buying devices like scanner,
printer etc. because one device can be shared

COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER NETWORK
Components of a computer network

1.Workstation or terminals is the individual computers connected to

share data and information
2.Server is the main computer that controls the functioning of the
entire network
3.Communication channels are used to connect computers in the
network to allow the computers to communicate with each other
4.Modem stands for Modulator demodulator, it is used to convert
digital data to analogue and vice versa
Components of a computer network

5.Router is the device that connects two or more networks and directs
the data between them.
6.Bluetooth is a networking technology which uses radio signals to
connect devices such as mobile phones and computers.

TYPES OF NETWORK
Types of Network

1.Personal Area Network(PAN) – Computers and devices are

interconnected over a short range and are belong to the same user
2.Local Area Network (LAN) – Connects computers over a relatively
short distance , for example within an office, school, compass or
home for sharing information
3. Metropolitan Area Network – Computers are interconnected
over an entire city, for example all the branches of a company are
interconnected using a MAN
4. Wide Area Network (WAN) – This is the type of a network which
covers over a large geographical area such as a country, a continent
or even the whole world
⮚ The internet is an example of a WAN
⮚ Satellite is generally used as a communication channel
