Project - Graffiti
Made by Moldanschi Rares Mihai from Class 11 A2.
What is Graffiti?

• Graffiti (plural; singular graffiti or graffito) is
art that is written, painted or drawn on a
wall or other surface, usually without
permission and within public view. Graffiti
ranges from simple written words to
elaborate wall paintings, and has
existed since ancient times, with examples
dating back to ancient Egypt, ancient
Greece, and the Roman Empire.
More about it :
• Graffiti is a controversial subject. In most countries, marking or
painting property without permission is considered by property
owners and civic authorities as defacement and vandalism, which is a
punishable crime, citing the use of graffiti by street gangs to mark
territory or to serve as an indicator of gang-related activities. Graffiti
has become visualized as a growing urban "problem" for many cities
in industrialized nations, spreading from the New York City
subway system and Philadelphia in the early 1970s to the rest of the
United States and Europe and other world regions.
History of Graffiti :
• The term graffiti originally referred to the inscriptions,
figure drawings, and such, found on the walls of
ancient sepulchres or ruins, as in the Catacombs of
Rome or at Pompeii. Use of the word has evolved to
include any graphics applied to surfaces in a manner
that constitutes vandalism.
• The only known source of the Safaitic language,
an ancient form of Arabic, is from graffiti: inscriptions
scratched on to the surface of rocks and boulders in the
predominantly basalt desert of southern Syria,
eastern Jordan and northern Saudi Arabia. Safaitic
dates from the first century BC to the fourth century
AD.
• The most common type of Graffiti
• Tag: A “tag” is often difficult to read and is applied
using one colour. The scribble acts as a kind of
nickname or persona that is consistent to the tagger.
The purpose of tagging is for taggers to leave their
Different mark or to stake their territory.

Types of • Throw up: A “throw up” is similar to a tag – the only

difference is that it is applied using two or three colors
Graffiti : Hip and has a more three-dimensional (3D) appearance.
• Piece: A “piece,” or masterpiece, is a more elaborate
hop version of a “throw up.” It is often larger in size, multi-
colored, multi-dimensional and artistic.
• Slap tag: A “slap tag” is a small sticker that has been
previously tagged and is applied quickly and easily to a
surface.
Different types of
graffiti : Folk epigraphy

• “Folk epigraphy” is a type of “rite of

passage” messaging system. For example,
“Jane loves Billy” or “I was here.” This type
of graffiti often has a focused audience, is
non-intrusive, transient and has a limited
recurrence.
Different types
of • This type refers to graffiti that is applied in
washrooms/latrines. Often, this takes shape as
graffiti : Latrin limericks or rhymes, and sometimes as slander.

Different types of
Graffiti : Scratchiti

• This is a type of graffiti that has been

scratched into a surface instead of being
applied by paint, crayon or marker.
Different types
of graffiti :
Stencil
Stencil graffiti is associated with
stencil art. It is meant to
communicate an idea or emotion.
Different types of
Graffiti : Gang
• Gangs use graffiti to establish a
symbol of unity, demarcate
boundaries, memorialize or
recruit. It is easier to read than
hip hop and sometimes makes
threats, is meant to extort, or
shows disrespect to other gangs.
