Adults

Objective

➔ In the pursuit of optimal safe resection,

advances in approaches that allow
intraoperative analysis of cancer and non-
cancerous tissues have been developed and
applied to humans resulting in improved
results. In addition, functional paradigms
based on stimulation techniques to supply the
brain's electrical activity have optimized
glioma resection in eloquent areas such as
Broca, Wernike, and perirolandic areas.
Methods

We will describe current technologies used for glioma resection, such as

awake craniotomy, fluorescence-guided surgery, laser interstitial thermal
therapy, and intraoperative mass spectrometry. In addition, we will
describe a newly developed tool that has shown promising results in
preclinical experiments for brain cancer: optical coherence tomography.
Result

Total gross resection, heterogeneity and dormancy of brain tumor-

initiating cells allows for therapeutic evasion, contributes to
recurrence and development of malignancy, and profoundly affects
survival.
Implication

advances in approaches that allow intraoperative analysis of cancer

and non-cancerous tissues have been developed and applied to
humans resulting in better results.
