Improvement of

Kolkata Connectivity
Due to geographical location and
shape of the state of West Bengal, to
and fro movement of major long
distance traffic for Kolkata happens
through its north and north-eastern
part through NH-6, NH-2 and NH-34.
Traffic from Western part and Southern part of the
country enters to Kolkata via NH-6 and NH-2 where
as the Traffic from North Bengal and North-Eastern
part of the country towards Kolkata and South 24
Pargana/ southern part of North 24 Parganas moves
through NH-34.
Widening of NH-34 to 4-Lane status for the portion
beyond Santoshpur in North 24 parganas is going on
to cater for the growing traffic but its widening
from Santoshpur to Barasat area has yet not been
possible due to the land constraint and hence the
bottleneck still persists on NH-34 near Barasat area.
As a result, movement of traffic from traffic from
NH-34 to Kolkata & South 24 Parganas has become
very difficult.

Under the above stated scenario, to & fro
entry of major traffic for Kolkata from other
parts of the state and the country practically
happens via NH-6 & NH-117 (Kona
Expressway) and NH-2 & NH-2E (Belghoria
Expressway) through the district of Howrah.

But, due to the growing traffic, the said

facilities near entry to Kolkata is
approaching saturation with time and entry
of traffic to Kolkata even is taking long time
at present.
The Proposed Development

(Central and the State Government have already taken up/

contemplated some projects)
6-Lane elevated corridor project
along Kona Expressway (NH-117) to
facilitate fast movement of through
traffic to Kolkata from Western and
Southern part via NH-6/ NH-2.

Construction of a third bridge over river
Hooghly (as a part of the proposed Varanasi –
Kolkata Expressway) for additional connectivity
between NH-6 and NH-117 to connect Kolkata /
South 24 Parganas via Uluberia(Nh-6)-Budge
Budge-Bishnupur (Nh-117) to facilitate direct
movement of traffic from nH-6 to Southern part
of Kolkata and South 24 parganas.

At the same time, it would help in faster

movement of traffic from Kolkata port.

Development a 4-Lane corridor to connect
Barajaguli (NH-34) with NH-2 (via Kampa –
Kalyani- Bansberia- mogra-Dankuni)

And the Kalyany Expressway via Kampa and also

widening of Kalyani Expressway to 4-lane/ 6-
Lane with a connection of Kalyani Expressway
with Belghoria Expressway (NH-2E).

This will facilitate the traffic on Nh-34 from

North Bengal to smoothly come to Kolkata by
avoidance of congestion of NH-34 in Barasat area

If it is possible to construct a bridge over river
Hooghly from Raichak (South 24 Parganas) to
Kukrahati (Purbo medinipur) to connect NH-116
with NH-117 it would further improve traffic
movement from southern part of the country to
south of Kolkata avoiding Kolkata core area and
at the same time Haldia port would be
connected to Kolkata directly.

But the problem yet to be addressed is development of a
Ring Road for Kolkata along with its radial connectivities to
ease out the problem of penetration of traffic from nH-6,
NH-2 and NH-34/ NH-35 through the core & congested area
of Kolkata.
The route from Barajaguli (NH-34) – Kampa- Mogra-
Dankuni (NH-2) – Uluberia (NH-6) – Budge Budge –
Bishnupur (NH-117) will act as the Northern and Western
part of the Ring Road, but its southern and eastern part is
yet to be developed/ improved and this balance part of the
ring may be planned via Bishnupur (Amtala, NH-117)-
Baruipur- Sonarpur- Bhangor – Guma near Habra (NH-35) –
Jeerut- Barajaguli (NH-34).
And the existing SHs/Urbun Roads/MDRs/ ODRs may be
widened/ improved/ elevated to facilitate for radial
movement of traffic for easy dispersal from Kolkata core.
