STANDARDS
◦ Project Managers have traditionally learnt about project
management as an extra skill to carry out their job.
◦ The project management standards are associated with the
following:
◦ Body of Knowledge
◦ Certification of Project Management
◦ Unit Standards
◦ Ethics and governance
◦ Global Forum
Body of Knowledge
◦ A body of knowledge has been built up around project management tools,
skills, techniques and processes.
◦ The database of information has ben developed into what the PMI (Project
Management Institution) call the Project Management Body of Knowledge
(PMBOK).
◦ PMBOK defines the body of knowledge as the sum of knowledge within
the profession and rests with the practitioners and academics that apply
and advance it.
◦ The purpose of the body of knowledge is to identify and describe best
practices that are applicable to most projects most of the time for which
there is widespread consensus about their value and usefulness.
◦ They are also intended to provide a common lexicon and terminology within
the profession.

◦ APM – Association for Project Management
◦ AIPM – Australian Institute for Project Management
◦ ACPM – Association for Construction Project Management

10 Knowledge Areas of

 Project Integration Management: This knowledge area is applied to all the phases of the
project lifecycle. It combines all the processes and activities into a unified project with clearly
defined outcomes.
 Project Scope Management: This knowledge area is concerned with what is required
instead of what is desired to complete the project and to satisfy the needs the stakeholders
and sponsors. It includes the scope definition, scope verification, and change management.
 Project Time Management: This consists of all the activities that is required for the project to
be delivered or finished in the right amount of time.
 Project Cost Management: In layman’s terms, it’s the method of developing a budget and
tracking whether the project is completed within the arranged budget. It includes activities
such as planning, budgeting, estimating, fundraising, financing, and monitoring.
 Project Quality Management: This includes all the activities that are required to ensure that
a project is delivered that meets all the requirements that was established in the beginning.
Thus, a quality project is delivered. The worth of your project is determined by its quality.
• Human Resource Management: In human recourse management, the focus lies on the
IS resources that will be needed to complete the project.
T • Project Communication Management: This knowledge area is primarily about
C communication. The processes are to ensure that proper communication takes place.
Q • Project Risk Management: In project risk management, the project manager is responsible

R for identifying potential risks and attempting to avoid or address them. After the project is
underway, the manager should resolve any issues that might arise.
C • Project Procurement Management: It is the process of acquiring commodities, services, or
R results from the outside. This is because the project manager and the development team can’t
P do everything by themselves. This area can be used for the planning, obtaining and delivery
of the final product.

• Project Stakeholder Management: This knowledge area refers to the involvement of
stakeholders from the beginning to the end in the project management. If a project manager
fails to incorporate the stakeholders early on, they will force you to adjust the tasks later to
satisfy their needs. This will impact the project negatively and limit the scope.
Project Management Professional (PMP) –
Certification of PM
• The certification process offers a means for experienced project
managers to gain a formal qualification in project management.
• The PMP is a certificate programme, which measures explicit knowledge
directly through a multi-choice test, and tacit knowledge and skill
indirectly by assessing a candidate’s experience.
• IPMA and AIPM have developed a multi-stage programme.
• Stage 1: Explicit knowledge is measured directly through a multi-question test.
• Stage 2: Tacit knowledge and skill are measured directly
• Stage 3: The programmes measure the performance of senior project managers
directly
• The IMPA has a fourth stage:
• Stage 4: Measure the performance of project directors.
Unit Standards
• SAQA (South African Qualification Authority)
• SETA (Sector Training and Education Authority)
• SGB (Project Management Standard Generating Body)
• PMSA (Project Management South Africa)
• The above worked together to register the further Education and Training Certificate –
Project Management (NQF Level 4, SAQA ID 50080)
• They utilized the set of standards leading towards the qualification locally and
internationally.
• The Qualification provides an entry point to further learning for NQF level 5 and above
qualifications as well as international qualification in project of general management.
Code of Ethics
• An ethical project management style is one where the project manager is honest,
sincere and is able to motivate the team, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders for
the best and fairest solutions.

Global Project Management Forum


• Project management has a global forum to discuss PM issues such as:
• What industries or types of projects are the main users of modern project
management.
• What industries or areas of application have the greatest need for more or better
project management.
• What industries or organizations offer the greatest opportunities for growth in
professional project management.
