Dionysus was one of the very few gods who
were kind toward mankind.
Who is he…?
• Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, madness, and
wild frenzy.

• Son of Zeus and princess Semele.

• Usually shown as young man with long hair.


• Unlike other gods isn’t athletic looking.
• Often wore a crown made of ivy, animal
skins or a purple robe.
Does he have a lover…?

Yes, princess Ariadne, daughter of king Minos


of Crete.
What are his symbols, sacred stuff, etc…?
• His symbol is a thyrsus.

• His sacred:
-animals are panthers, bulls, and serpents.
- plants are grapevine, ivy, and bindweed.

• His retinues are Silenus, satyrs, and maenads.

• The most important myth would be a myth about him being born twice.

• As the twice-born god, Dionysus had crossed the boundary between life and
death, and he was often portrayed as the god who crossed the boundary between
the civilized and uncivilized and the known and unknown.
