ANALYSIS

AND
DATA VISUALIZATION
WITH
POWER BI
- Bhavani Nainala
Initial Release: 11 July 2011
Stable Release: March 2021
Update version: (2.91.383.0)
WHAT IS POWER BI ?

• collection of software services, apps, and connectors that work together to turn your
unrelated sources of data into coherent, visually immersive, and interactive insights.
• Your data may be an Excel spreadsheet, or a collection of cloud-based and on-premises
hybrid data warehouses.
• Free version of the platform with a 1GB
• Faster processing than Excel
PURPOSE…

• Let’s you visualize your data.

• Share insights across your organization or embed them in your app or
website.
DOES POWER BI NEED CODING?

• You don't need any coding skills to learn or work with Power
BI. But if you wish to work beyond what the basic Graphical User
Interface (GUI) of Power BI offers you, you could look up DAX,
R or M, to get your job done. ... R is a statistical programming
language that is used extensively in the data science domain

• DAX – Data Analysis Expressions

• Power Query M Language

WHAT IS MEASURE…

• In Power BI Desktop, measures are created and displayed in Report View or Data

View. Measures you create yourself appear in the Fields list with a calculator icon. You
can name measures whatever you want and add them to a new or existing visualization
just like any other field.

POWER QUERY EDITOR

• The Query Editor in Power BI is used to transform or edit data files before they are
actually loaded into the Power BI. The Query Editor plays the role of an intermediate
data container where you can modify data by selecting rows and columns, splitting rows
and columns, pivoting and unpivoting columns, etc.

• You can perform lot of operation in it and able to transform data.

Click on Transform Data to get in to Power Query Editor.
HOW TO DO DATA VISUALIZATION

• In Power BI, you can create visualization in two ways.

• First is by adding from the right-side pane to Report Canvas. By default, it
is the table type visualization, which is selected in Power BI.
• Another way is to drag the fields from right side bar to the axis and
value axis under Visualization.

PUBLISH & WORKSPACE

• Once you are dashboard is completed you can publish them in workspace.

• Workspaces are used to collaborate and share content with colleagues. You can add colleagues
to your workspaces and collaborate on dashboards, reports, workbooks, and datasets. With one
exception, each workspace member needs a Power BI Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) license.

REVIEW
• What did you learn from this topic?
 This topic clearly explains on how to use power bi to create a report for the data. Its gives a
detailed explanation of how to get data and develop reports on data using various measures on
power bi. It also gives background on what is power bi, very helpful for people with no
knowledge in power bi

• Was it interesting and why?

 Yes, This topic is interesting. It actually shows the exact way of how to develop a power bi with
some interesting example. Video has also covered the topic on power bi query editor and how to
use various measures
REVIEW
• Identify 5 interesting ideas or fact that was missing from the video with reference.
 This presentation is good covered all the required points. In case to improve it, we can consider
the following:
 Power BI has various types of visualizations but only very few visualizations were used in example.
Using right visualizations with right data can make the example visually more appealing
 Power bi can access data from various sources. This topic can be considered as an enhancement to the
presentation
 Discussion on publish workspace (way to collaborate) is very interesting to know
 Power bi can develop a data relationship model with the data we provide that discussion will be
helpful if added
REVIEW
• Can you identify another example that could have been used to enhance the topic?
 This topic is really good and can be enhanced if a discussion on security within power bi.
Security aspect in power bi is not known to many people and will be interesting to know. DAX
functions in power bi can also make the research very interesting

• Did you find any future research potential?

 Yes. Power Bi is one of the leading visualization tool and is very useful in understanding and
analysing the data. Using power bi analysis with various areas of research in AI or data science
can make great research paper
