Steele (1999) observes the methods of Egyptian
architect Abdul El-Wakil:

‘El-Wakil had primarily looked to traditional societies for

inspiration, and the preference for what are now termed
‘sustainable strategies’ is generated through this
connection’

Hagan (1998) usefully observes:

Architects closest to traditional vernacular models can be judged

as the most ethical because their strategy requires the least
expenditure of fossil fuels. Their chosen materials tend to be
natural -wood, stone, thatch, earth… require little or no fossil fuel
for their use….compared with industrially extracted and processed
materials such as steel and glass.

The aims of this research is hence, to

Analyse the impact or evaluate Yeang’s theories against the

performance of his bioclimatic designs in the tropical Malaysian
context;

To realign the theories and performance of bioclimatic design

within the theories of sustainable design;

To evaluate the role the cultural agenda within a sustainable

one, and to reconcile ‘theory’ and ‘performance’ under the

Riau New Regional Public Library

Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia
The library’s design took inspiration from the “rehal”, stand used to hold Quran
open when reading, held deeper meaning to the call for renewal in culture of
reading as inscribed in the Quranic’s first verse “…… thou read” : Al Iqraq. This
two-fold roof also cover two existing structures to the left and right and hold it as
one memorable form. The façade facing north and south are fully glazed to
self-promote and hopefully invite the public, especially the youth to a culture
of reading and at once improve knowledge and eradicate endemic poverty in the
region.

The otherwise mundane façade displays generic traditional motif of songket in a

form of serial brise soliel , protecting the occupants from harsh western afternoon
sun. Whilst practicality and functionality remain supreme over post-modernist
eclectic embellishments or ornamentations (for nostalgic historical or cultural
references), the ‘ generic motif ’ adds value to function and allow it to mutate into
aesthetically pleasing sun-shading device.

The total number storeys are 39, with 2 level basement.

The large glazing on the west
and east facades are protected
from glare and heat by the
horizontal louvres - brise soliel,
hence using low-e or tinted
glass can be avoided.

This inexpensive solution

achieves it’s objective to reduce
heat transfer into the interior
but allowing the desirable
natural daylight. The overall net
effect is total reduction in
energy consumption.

W ILLI AM LI M
 William Lim, the man behind the firm CL3. Lim’s portfolio includes H
Queen’s and the East Hotel in Hong Kong, the Hard Rock Hotel in
Shenzhen, the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and the Millennium Mitsui
Garden Hotel in Tokyo.
 When he isn’t designing some of Asia’s most interesting structures, Lim
has another obsession: art. A notable collector of contemporary Hong
Kong art, Lim feeds his passion by serving on the acquisition committee
for the Tate Museum and the gallery committee for the Asia Society.
Here, the architect and art lover reminisces about the best concert he has
ever been to and why actor Aaron Kwok must be the one to play him in a
movie.
William Lim
William’s architecture firm CL3’s projects include H Queen’s, Marina
Bay Sands, East Hotel and Millennium Mitsui Garden Hotel Tokyo. A
trustee for Cornell University, he was conferred an honorary
doctorate by SCAD, and serves on the acquisition committee for the
Tate Museum and on the gallery committee for Asia Society.

The Chinese architect William Lim is the founder and managing director of CL3 Architects, an architecture and interior design firm
renowned for its conceptually clear and materially sensuous design ethos.

Lim's work includes a number of acclaimed experimental constructions that hover between art and architecture, such as Ladders
(2006), a monumental installation made of neon-lit, hand-tied bamboo ladders, presented at the 2006 Venice Biennale of
Architecture; Lantern Wonderland (2011),

a 37-meter-long bamboo fish crafted from thousands of traditional Chinese lanterns for the Mid-Autumn Festival in Victoria Park,
Hong Kong; and Bamboo Wind Pavilion (2013), a wind chime exhibited outdoors at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center.Lim began
collecting art more than ten years ago, focusing on works by Hong Kong artists.

Guided by his architectural training and artistic sensibilities, he followed a strategy of working directly with emerging artists, many
of whom have since risen to international prominence. Lim's collection, housed in a warehouse in the Wong Chuk Hang district of
Hong Kong, was opened to the public in 2015 during Art Basel Hong Kong and has since become a major destination for
contemporary Asian art.

The exhibition opens on 22 January at the John Hartell Gallery, Sibley Dome in Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, and runs until 15
March. It brings together selections of William Lim's architectural work - including drawings and models done while Lim was a
student in Cornell University's Department of Architecture, as well as several of his installation projects and works from his art
collection.
