Sources of Researchable

topic and research title

Facilitator: Ms. Neema Mawi; MSc. Edu, BScN, RN
Outlines

At the end of this session, students will be able

to:
 Describe different sources of research problems

 Explain characteristics of good research title

 Identify research topic and formulate research title

Research topic

 Subject or issue that a researcher is interested in when

conducting research.

 Starting point of every successful research project.

 Broad topic is identified and then the topic is narrowed

down to a specific problem to be studied.
Research problem
 Is a statement about an area of concern, a condition to be
improved, a difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling question
that exists in literature, in theory, or in practice that points to the
need for meaningful understanding and careful investigation

 Is an area where knowledge is needed to advance the practice of

nursing.

 Rare research report indicates the source of the research problems.

Sources of research problems

 Clinical experience
 Nursing literature
 Social issues
 Theories
 Idea from external source
 Program of research
Research problem
 Stated in two forms:
Interrogative – statement that ask
 Is there a correlation between the number of hours that baccalaureate
nursing students have studied and their anxiety levels before the midterm
examination?”
Declarative
 “This study examines the relationship between the number of hours that
baccalaureate nursing students have studied and their anxiety levels before the
midterm examination.”
Evaluation of a research problem

Researchable/ Feasible
 Researcher abilities and available research methods, designs,
research sites, resources, and timeframe.

Significance of the problem

 It should have a positive impact on the field.

 The impact can be practical or conceptual.

Supported by literature
Supported by literature
 It should be relevant to the field and supported by a number of recent peer-
reviewed studies in the field.

 Other researchers should support the existence of research problem and need for
addressing it.

Timely
 Your research problem should be related to the current needs in the field.

 Explore what topics are being covered in current journals in the field.

 Look at calls from relevant disciplinary organizations

Novel
 Your research problem should be original and unique

 It should seek to address a gap in the body of knowledge or

application.
Specific and clear
 Research problem should be specific enough to set the direction
of the study, raise research question(s), and determine an
appropriate research method and design.
Research title

 Summarize the main idea/s of the research.

 Has fewest possible words that adequately describe the

contents and/or purpose of the research paper.

 Is the part of a paper that is read the most, and it is

usually read first.
Characteristics of Good research Title

 It should be descriptive, accurate, concise, precise, not

misleading

 It should predict the content of the research paper.

 It should be interesting to the reader.

 It should reflect the tone of the writing

 It should contain important keywords that will make it easier to

be located during a keyword search.

 Maximum 15 words!
Types of research titles

Descriptive/indicative title
 It contains essential elements of the research theme, however, does not
disclose main findings or the conclusion. E.g.

 Administration of medication at time of surgical incision on reduction of

need for pain medication twenty-four hours after surgery.
Declarative/assertive title
 It states the main finding of the study in the title itself.

 Administering pain medication at time of surgical incision reduce the need

for pain medication twenty-four hours after surgery.
Interrogative/question title

 The title is presented in term of question. E.g.

 Does the administration of pain medication at time of surgical

incision reduce the need for pain medication twenty-four hours
after surgery?
 Is yoga as effective as traditional physical therapy in reducing
lymphedema in patients who have had head and neck cancer
treatment?

 Effectiveness of yoga in reducing lymphedema in patients who have

had head and neck cancer treatment.

 Yoga as effective as traditional physical therapy reduce lymphedema

in patients who have had head and neck cancer treatment.
Individual assignment

 Formulate three (3) research titles from the topic of your interest.

 Assignment should be printed; front- Times New Roman, word

size-12.

 Each student should handle his/her assignment to respective CR of

the program then CRs’ will submit to the teacher.

 Deadline for submission is on 30th March 2023 at 4.00pm. Late

submission will associate with penalty.
