WHAT COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER (CGC)

 Compressed Gas : material contained under pressure

(Dissolved gas, liquefied by compression)
 Compressed Gas Cylinder 3 form :

Compressed (Air)

Liquefied (N2,O2, CO2)

Dissolved (Acetylene)
HOW USED AND HANDLING OF CGC

Before Using Cylinder INDETIFY GAS

Read LABEL, Don’t Depend On The Colour of The Cylinder

HOW USED AND HANDLING OF CGC

Never remove the valve protection cap until the cylinder is secured
and ready for use.

Cylinder with fixed cap

(Tulip type)

After the regulator is attached, the cylinder valve should be opened

just enough to indicate pressure on the regulator gauge (no more
than one full turn) and all the connections checked with a soap
solution for leaks.
HOW USED AND HANDLING OF CGC
 NEVER handle CGC or Fittings with greasy hands,
oily gloves or rags.
 For short distance moving, a cylinder may be rolled
 In used, keep CGC upright and secured to a firm
support
 Closed cylinder valve whe the work is stopped.
 Return empty to their storage rack immediately
 When CGC are in use, don’t place material or
objects on top of the CGC
 ONLY hand tighten cylinder valve. NEVER permit a
hammer or wrench to be used open valves.
WHERE CGC BE STORED

Separate storage areas based upon :

 TYPES OF GAS
 FLAMMABLE
 NON-FLAMMABLE
 POISON
 FULL & EMPTY CYLINDERS
TYPES OF GAS

FLAMMABLE GAS NON FLAMMABLE GAS

Examples are : Examples are: Nitrogen,
Acetylene, Argon, Helium, Air, Carbon
Hydrogen, Propane, Dioxide, Oxygen
Butane

POISON GASES
Examples Toxis : Examples Corrosive :
Arsine Chlorine
Phosphine Hydrogen Chloride
Hydrogen Sulphide
STORAGE AREA OF CGC

• Secure the cylinder with valve protection cap in place (Chain, tied,
etc.)
• Cylinder are to be located in an area protected from direct sunlight,
at minimal exposure < 52oC.
• Cylinder should be stored on a smooth floor.
• Tarpaulins must NEVER be used to cover cylinders.
• Keep storage area away from heavy traffic, with easy access.
• Storage areas to have open ventilation top and bottom.
• Light and electric switches for stores of combustible gases must :
flame proof type and installed outside the store area.

0
TRANSPORTATION OF CYLINDERS

• NEVER move manually CGC more that 2 m.

• Always use a carrier/cart.

• Check all valves are closed before are moved.

• Cylinders should never be rolled or dragged.

• Only one cylinder should be handled (moved) at a time.

• To protect the valve during transportation, the cover cap
should be screwed on hand tight and remain on until the
cylinder is in place and ready for use.
