BALINESE GAMELAN

UGAL
This is a bronze metallophone
that are suspended over tuned
bamboo resonators.
JEGOGAN
It plays the lowest notes in the
ensemble
JUBLAG
This is a gangsa metallophone
that also plays the melody.
KANTIL
Smallest in the gangsa. Plays the
melody or an interlocking pattern.

PEMADE
This instrument plays the main
melody of the piece
REYONG
They share the same notes as the
pemade but plays the
interlocking pattern instead.
GONGS
This consists of two large hanging
gongs.

KENDHANG
These are two drum pairs

KEMPLI
This is small horizontal gong that
keeps time.
CENG - CENG
These consist of four to five
horizontally mounted
cymbals.

TROMPONG
These are ten small gongs
that play an ornamentation
of the melody
Musical Analysis

 Both ensembles used two tuning system; Pelog (seven


tones) and Slendro (five tones).
 Javanese gamelan makes use of slower and grander
tempos.
 Balinese gamelan makes use of fast and very rhythmic
tempo.
