1 ATTIRES,
FABRICS, and
TAPESTRY
Traditional fabric design is an important type of Southeast Asian
art because it reflects the culture of the country from which it came.
This can be gleaned through the distinctive characteristics of the
designs and motifs.
Southeast Asian fabrics features an extensive range of local
raw materials on which an astonishing array of techniques like
appliqué, batik, weaving, and embroidery have been applied.

They depict versatility and originality, and showcase how the

indigenous Southeast Asian traditions can be combined with
outside influence to produce diverse works of art.
BATIK
For the Javanese people of Indonesia, batik (to
dot) is not just a piece of cloth, it is part of their
ancient tradition and culture.

The patterns are more than a decoration, they are

more likely symbols that express the cultural
identities of the locals in the areas from which they
came.
The word batik refers to the technique of
decorating cloth called wax – resist dyeing. Wax is
applied to the designs to prevent the dye from
penetrating parts of the cloth, where the design has
been formed.

Thai Silk
If Indonesia and Malaysia have batik fabric, Thailand has its own
traditional fabric called Thai silk. The delicate fabric is made from
cocoons of silkworms or catterpillars raised specifically for the
purpose mainly in a Northeastern region of Thailand called Khorat
Plateau.

Thai silk is timeless, a unique textile art handwoven by Thai rural

woman with intricate and traditional geometric and zoomorphic motif.
It depicts the character, thoughts, emotions, feelings, spirit, and life of
the weaver.
Since traditional Thai silk is handwoven, each design is
unique and cannot be duplicated. Aside from the unique
design, Thai silk fabric gives the illusion of changing its
colors as you hold the fabric in different angles against
light.

Thai people’s traditional attire is influenced by the Buddhist, the

Chinese, and a little of the Islamic motif. Large golden temple with
projecting roof and tall towers dominate Thailand’s landscape. At most, it is
dominated by the Royal Temple and Palace, the symbol of the country.
Cambodian Silk
 Ikat or Ikkat Technique
This is a technique in which weavers tie and dye the weft portion of the
yarn in order to create patterns. This is the technique used in producing the
fabric for the sampot hoi – the traditional wrap skirt worn by Cambodian
women. Most common motifs include lattice, stars, and dots.
 Uneven Twill Technique
Two threads are woven to produce single or two – color fabrics. The
finished fabric shows the color of one thread on one side, while the colors
of the two other threads are combined to produce the color of the reverse
side.
Laos Woven Sinh
The traditional skirt worn by the
women of Laos is called Sinh. It is said
that each Sinh skirt is unique, and tells
of tale woven into its every strand. It is
part of Laos tradition, after all, that
stories are passed on from generation to
generation not orally or through writing,
but by weaving.
