INTRODUCTION
Reading is an activity that cannot be separated in our
daily life. It requires some techniques. In order to be
able to read well, we can learn those techniques. The
purpose of reading is not just only to understand the
text, but sometimes we need to find specific information
in it. Especially in academic reading, it is very common
if we are asked to identify the main idea, understand
vocabulary from context and a writer’s point of view in
the text. There are several ways to read a text, namely:
. skimming, scanning, intensive reading, and extensive
reading. In this unit, we are going to discuss about
skimming technique
04

THE MEANING OF SKIMMING

What is skimming?

Skim the text is the first thing you should do when you start to
read a new text. To skim means to 'read quickly' or to 'glance
through' a text. When we skim a text, we do not read the whole
text word for word. It is not important to understand the meaning
of each word when we are skimming. We can use many clues
which are available in the text to give us some background
information. The clues might be pictures or images related to the
topic or an interesting title.

EXAMPLE OF
SKIMMING ACTIVITIES
What activities do we usually do?

Example of skimming in our daily life are

when we skim a newspaper to quickly get the
general news of the day. If you like reading
magazines, you skim it to quickly discover
which articles you would like to read in more
detail. We often get brochure about something,
so we skim it to quickly get informed.
