Introduction
Who was Cristopher Columbus?

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who is

credited with discovering America. He was born in Genoa,
Italy in 1451, and as a young man, he became interested in
exploring the world beyond Europe. In 1492, Columbus
sailed west from Spain in search of a new route to Asia, but
instead, he reached the Caribbean islands of the Americas.
This event is commonly known as the "discovery of
America," although Columbus was not the first person to
reach the Americas.

Controversy

Despite his achievements, Columbus's legacy is

controversial, and his treatment of the indigenous peoples he
encountered has been widely criticized. Columbus and his
men enslaved and mistreated many of the Native Americans
they encountered, and they also introduced diseases that
caused widespread death and suffering. In recent years, there
has been a growing movement to reexamine Columbus's
legacy and acknowledge the contributions and experiences
of the indigenous peoples who were affected by his voyages.

Facts & Photos
Facts: • Columbus was a deeply religious man who believed that his
voyages were part of a divine plan. He saw himself as a
messenger of God who was spreading Christianity to the
peoples of the New World.

• Columbus was not the first European to reach the Americas.

Norse explorers had established settlements in North America
centuries earlier, and there is also evidence to suggest that
other European explorers may have visited the Americas
before Columbus.

• Columbus was not a wealthy man and struggled to secure

funding for his expeditions. He spent many years trying to
persuade various European rulers to support his voyages, but
he was often turned down.
