PAKISTAN’S FIRST PLASTIC
ROAD

HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
Plastic Roads:
Plastic roads are constructed using plastic waste, such as
plastic bottles, bags, and packaging materials.

Key Benefits:

• Environmentally friendly
• Cost-effective
• Durable and resistant to wear and tear
• Reduces plastic waste in landfills and oceans
Plastic Waste Crisis in
Pakistan
• In Pakistan, the plastic waste problem has
reached alarming levels.
• Pakistan generates 20 million tons of plastic
waste every year.
• Health Risks
• Drainage and Flooding Issues
Introduction to Pakistan's First Plastic
Road Project
• Ataturk Avenue, Islamabad is the 1st Plastic road introduced in
Pakistan.
• Coca-Cola, National Incubation Center and the CDA have
partnered with Teamup, Their collaborative effort involves the
construction of very first sustainable one Km plastic road at
Ataturk Avenue in Islamabad
• This remarkable initiative marks a significant step towards
sustainable infrastructure practices and addresses issue of plastic
waste management in Pakistan.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a commonly used plastic
material that plays a significant role in the construction of plastic
roads.

 Plastic Waste Utilization

 Strength and Durability
 Flexibility and Fatigue Resistance
 Improved Waterproofing
 Reduced Rutting
Construction Process:
1. Collection and Sorting of Plastic Waste:
 Plastic waste is collected from various sources.
 The waste is sorted on its type and quality.

2. Shredding and Processing:

 The sorted plastic waste is shredded into
smaller pieces or granules.
 The sorted plastic waste is shredded into
smaller pieces or granules.
3. Mixing with Asphalt:
 The processed plastic waste is mixed with
hot bitumen or asphalt, which serves as the
binder.
 The plastic waste is added to the asphalt
mixture in predetermined proportions

4. Homogenization and Compounding:

 The plastic-infused asphalt mixture is

thoroughly mixed to ensure a
homogenous distribution of plastic
throughout the material.
 Additional aggregates are added to
maintain strength and stability.
5. Paving and Compaction:

 The plastic-infused asphalt mixture is

laid and spread evenly on the prepared
roadbed.
 Compactors, rollers, and other
equipment are used to achieve the
desired compaction levels.
6. Finishing and Curing:
 The compacted plastic road surface is
finished using traditional road
construction techniques.
 The road is then left to cure and
harden over time, allowing the
plastic-infused asphalt to set and
bond effectively.
Environmental Benefits:
 Reduction in plastic waste going to landfills and oceans.
 Conservation of natural resources
 Lower carbon footprint compared to conventional road construction
Economic Benefits:
 Cost-effectiveness of plastic roads
compared to traditional roads.
 Potential for job creation in the recycling
and road construction sectors
Durability and Performance:
 Longevity and resilience of plastic roads

 Resistance to cracking, rutting, and water

damage

 Potential for reduced maintenance and repair

costs
Future Implications and Scaling Up:

 Potential for expanding plastic road

projects across Pakistan
 Encouraging other countries to adopt
similar initiatives.
Challenges and Limitations:
 Need for appropriate waste
management infrastructure.
 Ensuring the quality and safety
standards of plastic-infused asphalt.
