Students
• will come to know about the about the different tests to evaluate the
properties of soil so that proper steps are taken to make it durable for required road
project.

Standard Penetration Test
• The standard penetration test (SPT) is an in-situ dynamic penetration
•
test designed to provide information on the geotechnical engineering properties
of soil. This test is the most frequently used subsurface exploration
drilling test performed worldwide.

Dynamic Cone Penetration Test
• The Dynamic Cone Penetration Test provides a measure of a
material’s in-situ resistance to penetration. The test is performed by
driving a metal cone into the ground by repeated striking it with a
17.6 lb (8 Kg)weight dropped from a distance of 2.26 feet (575 mm).
The penetration of the cone is measured after each blow andis
recorded to provide a continuous measure of shearing resistance up
to 5 feet below the ground surface. Test results can be correlated to
California Bearing Ratios, in-situ density, resilient modulus, and
bearing capacity.

Vane Shear Test (VST)
• The shear vane test is a method of measuring the un-drained shear strength of
a cohesive soil. The test is carried out with equipment consisting of a rod with
vanes mounted to it that is inserted into the ground and rotated. A gauge on
the top of the rod measures the torque required to cause failure of the soil and
provides a conversion to shear strength. The equipment has been in use since
at least 1948. The equipment has also been used since at least 1967 to assess
the shear strength of packs of snow at risk of forming a slab avalanche

Pressure meter Test
• A pressure meter is a meter constructed to measure the “at-rest
horizontal earth pressure”. The pressure meter has two major
components. The first component is a read-out unit that remains
above ground. The second component of the pressure meter is a
probe that is inserted into the borehole (ground) to read
the pressure.
