Instruction: Raise your hand if you want to answer, write your answer on the board
and provide a brief explanation why did you come up with that answer as it will serve
as your review.

Write letter T if the statement is true and letter F if the statement is false.
1. Mutation is a change in the base-sequence of DNA.
2. Chromosomal mutations are changes where parts of the
chromosomes are broken and lost during mitosis.
3. Down’s syndrome is not an example of mutation.
4. Mutation does not affect the growth and development of an
organism.
5. Genetic code is set of rules that specify the codons in DNA or
RNA that corresponds to the amino acids in proteins.

Biodiversity and
Evolution

Prepared by: Alexis Christian G. Espinosa

BSED Sciences Pre-Service Teacher
Objectives: High School Grade: 10 TNHS

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

• Understand how evolution is being studied from the fossil record and
molecular data.
• Give the importance of understanding the origin of life.
• Explain why reproduction, variation, and adaptation are necessary for the
survival of species.
Lesson overview
You may have met the term "evolve" in some popular comic series or video games
and somehow developed an idea of what the word means. Some organisms may
look the same but have distinct differences from each other, others may not be
related to each another, but they have similar functional features and
characteristics. Some animals before are very different from the animals we have
now

Sources of Evidence for Evolution 30
min

Organisms inhabiting the earth have changed

overtime, their structures, traits, and abilities
allowed them to adapt and survive in their
environment. Data from the fossil records, anatomy
and, embryonic development and biochemistry
could be analyzed to demonstrate if evolution of life
on earth has taken place.
Fossil Records 30
min

These are the traces of organisms that lived in the

past and were preserved by natural processes. They
can be the remains of organisms which include
shells, teeth, bones, and also the feces embedded
in rocks, peat, resin, and ice.
Unlocking Key Terms

Paleontology

is the study of ancient life, from dinosaurs to prehistoric plants, mammals, fish,
insects, fungi, and even microbes.

Paleontologist

is a scientist who studies the history of life on Earth through the fossil record.

 Fossils are the evidence of past life on the planet and can include those
formed from animal bodies or their imprints (body fossils).
 Fossil evidence reveals how organisms changed over time and what our
planet was like long ago.
Fossils are found to be embedded in sedimentary
In what type of Rock most fossils are found?
rocks.

Sedimentary rocks are the rocks that are firmed due

to the compaction and lithification of
sediments. These sediments provide favorable
conditions for the dead organisms to turn into a
fossil.
Types of Fossils

Impression Fossil c Compression Fossil

Impression fossils are a
type of trace fossil.
Impression fossils form
when a leaf, shell, skin, or
Impression Fossil
foot. leaves an imprint in c

soft earth. When the

imprint hardens, it forms
a fossil in the shape of
the original object.
They are formed due to
the burial of living
things or parts of it in
sediments. These buried
Compress c
fragments are flattened
Compression
as a result of
compression or due to
overlying pressure
coming from the
sediments.
What parts of an organism remains will
form a fossil?

The soft parts of an animal or plant

decay more quickly then its hard
parts, therefore. Teeth and bones are
more likely to be preserved than skin,
tissues, and organs.

Methods Used in Determining the Age of Fossils

1.Relative Dating
2.Radiometric Dating
Relative Dating
is the process of determining if one rock or geologic event is older or
younger than another, without knowing their specific ages
The younger the sedimentary rock layer is assumed to be found on
top and the older rock is found at the bottom layer.
Relative Dating

Relay on the illustration, if fossil

“X” is located of the red color layer
of the rock (1), while fossil “Y” was
found on the green layer of the
rock (2). Which fossil is the oldest
and youngest?
Radiometric Dating

Is a method used to determine the age of rocks using the decay of

radioactive isotopes present in rocks.

All organisms have decaying carbon-14 in it. Plants and animals

that are still alive constantly replace the supply of carbon in their
body and the amount of carbon-14 in their body stays the same.
When an organism dies, carbon-14 starts to decay.
