Comparison and Contrast
What comes to your mind when you hear the
words compare and contrast?
DEFINITION
Compare and Contrast is a common form of academic
writing, either as an essay type on its own, or as part of a
larger essay analyzes two subjects by either comparing
them, contrasting them, or both. The purpose of writing a
comparison or contrast essay is not to state the obvious
but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected
similarities between two subjects.
Comparing is showing
the similarities between
objects, ideas or people.
It is a form of matching.

Example (comparison)
1.) Computers can be used to communicate easily, for example
via email. Similarly/Likewise, the mobile phone is a convenient
tool for communication.
2.) Just like Charles Law, the Gay Lussac Law have the two
variables are directly proportional.
3.) Boyle's law and Charles' law both speak about the
temperature, volume, and pressure of gases though they
establish different relationships between these three variables.
Example (contrast)
1.) Computers, although increasingly small, are not always easy
to carry from one place to another. However, the mobile phone
can be carried with ease.
2.) Charles' law is defined for a system with a constant
pressure while Boyle's law is defined for a system with
constant temperature.
3.) Boyle's Law tells us that the volume of gas increases as the
pressure decreases. However Charles' Law tells us that the
volume of gas increases as the temperature increases.
