CPAC Objectives (how are you going to meet these?)

2d. Selects appropriate equipment and measurement strategies

in order to ensure suitably accurate results

4a. Makes accurate observations relevant to the experimental or

investigative procedure.

5b. Sources of information are cited demonstrating that research

has taken place, supporting planning and conclusions.
CPAC objectives
CP7 Method and Protocol 2d, 4a and 5b

1) Read through the method thoroughly

2) Annotate the method with any practical tips that need adding on. Are any
steps assumed and therefore need to be included?
3) Is there anything content wise that you need to review? Observations,
reactions etc. Again add these onto the protocol sheet.
4) How are you going to record the results?
5) What are the important marking points that are going to be
assessed in reference to the CPAC objectives?
6) How are you going to organise the practical to ensure a safe
environment (e.g. Part 2 before Part 1)?
Risk Assessment
Create a thorough risk assessment for this practical using the Hazcards.

*CPAC 5b involves citations and referencing of the research that has been
conducted - are you
following the advice/
checklist on the feedback
sheet?*
Citing sources of information

Any secondary sources fully cited (academic honesty!)

Publications to include title, author, date of publication

Websites to include full URL and date accessed

Checklist
● Understand what the tests can identify
● Understand the chemistry behind the test (use the pre-lab questions to
prompt research/recap)
● Annotated the method for details for how to collect accurate & valid data
● Created a risk assessment and cited any reliable secondary resources and
information (see feedback proforma for expectations)
● Created a results table
Key Points for Other Tests Involving Solutions and Liquids

- What are the safety points related to organic reagents?

- How would you dispose of organics?
- How would you best observe the colour of a precipitate or solution?
- Negative test results are just as important to note down as positive test
results!
Key Points for Flame Tests
- Why must we clean the nichrome wire several times using hydrochloric acid
before conducting a new flame test?
- Why must we make sure the wire doesn’t get too hot?
- How would you ensure the colour seen is only from the metal ion?
Practical Time!

- Wear gloves, goggles and a

lab coat
- All spillages (inc. on gloves)
washed thoroughly
- New pipette for each
chemical!
- READ THE LABELS
BEFORE USING!
- Bung any organics and
make sure lids are placed
back on!
- Check where to dispose of
test tube contents
After the practical
- All annotations complete
- Analysis of results (on method sheet)
- Questions (on method sheet)
- CP7 Exam Questions
