SOLID WASTES

GENERATION AND
DISPOSAL SYSTEMS
SOLID WASTE
• Refers to waste that is solid , including semi solid or wet
wastes with insufficient moisture or fluid content to be free
flowing.
• Non- soluble materials ranging from municipal garbage to
industrial wastes that contain complex & sometimes
hazardous substances.
• Garbage
• Rubbish
• Demolition products
• Sewage treatment residue
• Dead animals
• Manure and other disregarded materials
SOLID WASTE GENERATION
• Rates the amount of waste created by residence or
business over a certain amount of time ( day, year at
etc. )Waste generation includes all materials
discarded, whether or not they are later recycled or
disposed in a landfill.
• The characteristics , qualities , volume and
composition of solid waste generated may differ
from one country to another and between urban
and rural areas.
• It depends mainly upon the customs, climate, living
conditions and economic standard of the area.
GENERATION AND PHYSICAL FACTORS
THAT AFFECT THE QUANTITIES OF
WASTE GENERATED AND COLLECTED
A. Geographical location – related primarily to the
different climate that can influence both the amount
generated and collection operation.
B. Season of the year
C. Frequency of collection
D. Characteristics of population
E. Extent of salvage and recycling
F. Legislation
G. Public attitude
H. Use of kitchen waste grinders
MUNICIPAL SOLID
WASTE ( MSW )
- Municipal waste is generally defined as waste
collected by municipalities or other local
authorities .
• With rising urbanization and change in life style and
food habits, the amount of municipal solid waste has
been increasing rapidly and its composition
changing.
• used to collect data on waste composition in MSW
vary widely in different regions and countries.
MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE
( MSW )
- Waste composition is one of the
main factors influencing emissions
from solid waste treatment , as
different waste types contains
different amount of degradable
organic carbon ( DOC ) and fossil
carbon. Waste composition , as well
as the classification.
BROADLY 3 TYPES OF SOLID
WASTE

• Household waste – municipal waste

• Industrial waste or Hazardous
waste
• Biomedical waste- hospital waste
as Infectious waste
Generation Rate of Municipal
Solid Waste
• Determination of the generation rate of solid waste is
important to obtain in order to determine waste
volume and for subsequent solid waste management.
• Waste generation includes all materials discarded,
whether or not they are later recycled or disposed in a
landfill.
• Waste generation rates for residential and commercial
activities can be used to estimate the impact of new
developments on the local waste stream.
• They may be useful in providing a general level of
information for planning purposes.
WASTE CLASSIFICATION
On the basis of :
• (a) Physical State ( solid , liquid , gaseous )
• (b) Original Use ( mining waste , food waste etc. )
• (c) Material ( paper, glass , construction debris
etc. )
• (d) Physical Properties ( combustible,
compostable, recyclable)
• (e) Sources ( domestic , commercial , industrial
etc. )
• (f) Safety Level ( hazardous , non- hazardous etc. )
MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE
COMPOSITION
1. Food waste
2. Garden ( yard ) and park waste
3. Paper and cardboard
4. Wood
5. Textiles
6. Nappies ( disposal diapers )
7. Rubber and leather
8. Plastics
9. Metal
10.Glass (and pottery and china )
11. Other ( e. g. electronic waste )

RA 9003
• The Republic Act (RA) 9003, otherwise
known as the Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000, provides the
necessary policy framework, institutional
mechanisms and mandate to the local
government units (LGUs) to achieve 25%
waste reduction through establishing an
integrated solid waste management plans .
