Origins of Basketball
• Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian
physical education instructor.
• It was originally played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals.
• The game quickly gained popularity and became an official Olympic sport
in 1936.

• A basketball court is a rectangular surface divided into two halves by a
midcourt line.
• The standard dimensions of a court are 94 feet by 50 feet.
• Equipment includes a basketball, basketball hoop, and backboard.

•Basketball is played by two teams, each consisting of five players.
•The objective is to score points by shooting the ball into the opponent's hoop while

distribution, and running the offense.
•Shooting Guard: Typically a strong scorer with excellent shooting and
offensive skills.
•Small Forward: A versatile player who can score, defend, and contribute in
multiple ways.
•Power Forward: Known for their inside presence, rebounding, and scoring
near the basket.
•Center: Often the tallest player, responsible for protecting the rim,
rebounding, and scoring close to the basket.
