SECRETIONS BY

SMALL INTESTINE
◦Burner’s glands are located b/w pylorus of
stomach and papilla of vater in duodenum
alkaline mucous in response:
1. Tactile or irritating movements in duodenum
mucosa
◦Vagal stimulation increases Burner’s glands
activity
◦GIT hormones especially secretin also
increases these glands secretion
Function of Mucous
◦Mucous contains high amount of bicarbonates which
neutralize the acidic chyme coming from stomach
◦Point to be noted here is :
◦Sympathetic stimulation inhibits the secretion of burner’s
glands so it leads to
◦50% of peptic ulcers in people under long term of
sympathetic stimulation
Intestinal digestive juice secretion
mechanism
◦On the entire surface of small intestine are located
small pits known as Cryps of Lieberkhuhnn
◦These are located in between villi of the intestinal
mucosa
◦Both the crypts and villi surfaces are covered by
mucosal epithelium
◦Goblet cells of epithelium secrete mucous
◦Enterocytes covering these Crypts secrete water
and electrolytes into these pits while
◦Enterocytes of villi reabsorb watery fluid and
electrolytes along with end products of
digestion
Mechanism of water and electrolytes
secretion
◦Enterocytes on crypts surfaces secrete chlorides
and bicarbonates actively into these crypts
◦Electropositive drag also pulls the sodium out of
the enterocytes into these pits
◦So finally water follows the sodium and comes
out in these crypts to make final watery Secretion.
Enzymatic secretion by small intestine
◦Enterocytes on surfaces of villi and microvilli
secrete following enzymes:
1. Peptidases
2. Sucrase,Maltase,isomaltase and lactase
3. Lipases
Digestion of carbohydrates
◦Our diet contains carbs in the form of :
1. Sucrose or cane sugar
2. Lactose from milk
3. Starches from non animal sources e.g
potatoes and grains
◦Digestion of carbohydrates starts in mouth by
enzyme ptyalin or salivary amylase
◦It performs about 5 percent digestion but it
becomes inactive in acidic pH of Gastric
secretion.
◦As the carbs mixed with acidic chyme enter the
duodenum,here ,an enzyme pancreatic amylase
hydrolysed them further into maltose and other
glucose polymers.
Digestion by intestinal enzymes
Disaccharides reaching the samll intestine are
hydrolysed into mono saccharide constituents by
enzymes
1. Lactase
2. Maltase and dextrinase
3. sucrase
