Continuous flow of an electric charge through a circuit requires

PRE-ASSESSMENT
a. A Source of electric current
b. A conducting material
c. A closed circuit
d. All of these
2. If there is an open circuit, which of the following could be used to complete the circuit?
a. a piece of paper

b. a piece of yarn
c. a nickel
3. A material in which electricity flows through easily is a
a. Insulator
b. Conductor
c. Resistor
4. Electricity is the flow of _____________. (electrons / protons / neutrons)

5. Current is the flow of Electric charge. (TRUE/FALSE)

• Electricity- it is a controllable and
convenient form of energy for a variety of
uses in homes, schools, industries etc.
ELECTRICITY

• LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Define electric current and its SI unit.
2. Solve numericals by applying the formula of electric
current.
CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS

• Conductors- are substances that have the property to conduct

electricity through them. These have free or loosely held electrons
which helps in conducting electricity.
• Eg: Copper

• Insulators- are substances that have the property to obstruct the

flow of electricity. These do not have free electrons present in them.
• Eg: Rubber Insulation.
CHARGE
• Electric charge is the physical property of matter that causes it to
experience a force when placed in an electromagnetic field. There are
two types of electric charge: positive and negative.

• SI UNIT OF ELECTRIC CHARGE- COULOMB (C)

• 1C = charge of 6 x electrons
• Charge of 1 electron = a negative charge of 1.6 x coulomb.
ELECTRIC CURRENT
•Electric current is the amount of charge flowing through a particular area in unit time.
(Or)

•It is the rate of flow of electric charges.

•If net charge ‘Q’ flows across any cross section of a conductor in time ‘t’, then the current ‘I’
through the cross section:

• SI unit of electric current is called ampere (A)

• 1 ampere is constituted by the flow of 1 coulomb of charge per

second.

1A =
• Small units of current are expressed in milliampere or in
microampere.
1mA =
1A =
• The instrument used to measure electric current is an AMMETER.
ASSESSMENT

1. Calculate the number of electrons constituting one

coulomb of charge.
2. A current of 0.5 A is drawn by a filament of an
electric bulb for 10 minutes. Find the amount of
electric charge that flows through the circuit.
