SITE

 Ancient settlers have history to their migration to place.


 There are various reasons why early settlers moved around the
region hunting and gathering food.
 Early settlers were most concerned about their safety and getting
a supply of food and water.
 Site means the actual place where a village or town grew up. A
site was chosen if it had one or more natural advantages
HOW WERE THE SITES FOR EARLY
SETTLEMENTS CHOSEN?
WATER SUPPLY
Early settlers considered water bodies which were less polluted
because plenty of water was needed for drinking, cooking and
washing. Water might come from a river, spring or well.

DEFENCE/PROTECTION
Good views from a hilltop give you warning if you are about to be
attacked by your enemies.

 FARMING

Early settlers were attracted to flat land(Easier to build on, for growing
crops and travelling to other towns). Sites must not flood or be marshy.

BUILDING MATERIALS /FUELS


Early societies needed easy access to wood or stones so it was useful to
be near a wood or a rocky hillside. They needed the wood for
fire(cooking and warmth), house building, boat construction and stone for
building as well.

BRIDGING POINTS/FORDS
Easy to cross a river either on foot at a ford or a by a
bridge was considered by the early settlers. Bridge served
as a trading route for settlements on either side of the river.
SITUATION
 Situation refers to the location of a settlement in relation to its
surrounding area.
 The physical geography of the land surrounding of a settlement is
very important.
 A settlement’s potential to grow is based on site factors and a
good situation.
 A settlement’s growth can be limited by bad situation of a
settlement.
