BOYLE’S LAW

Hello! I’m...
ROBERT BOYLE
I was known for my law of gases, I was a pioneer of modern
Chemistry. Every general-chemistry student learns of me (1627–
1691) as the person who discovered that the volume of a gas
decreases with increasing pressure and vice versa—the famous
Boyle's law.
GROUP ACTIVITY BEFORE
THE LESSON
● Group yourselves into five groups
● Choose a leader and a secretary
● Prepare 1 whole sheet of paper
● Write the given questions and copy the table
● Make sure every member of the group must participate
Recall the symbol and common units of the
following properties by completing the table

Property Symbol Three common units

Pressure

Temperature

Volume
Identify the word being described
below by choosing it in the box
Pressure Temperature
Volume Liter (L) Pascal (Pa)

1. It is the measure of the hotness or coldness of an object.

2. It is an average effect of the forces of the colliding molecules.
3. It refers to the amount of space occupied by the gases
4. It is a unit of pressure.
5. It is a unit of volume.
Mark "√" in the first column if the sentence
describes gases and "X" if it does not portray
gases
Gases (✓) or Not Gases (X)
Statement
Gases are hard to compress.
Gases expand to fully fill their containers

Gases take the shape of the container

wherein particles are able to move
naturally to all parts of the container.

Particles of gases move at random

directions very fast travelling in straight-
line paths.
The molecules of the gas are very large
compared to the very short distances
between them.
Introducing the concept
of Boyle's Law, which
states that the volume
of a gas varies inversely
with its pressure at a
constant temperature.

1. To what pressure must a gas compressed in order to get into a

400.0 cubic Ft. At a standard pressure?
2. Convert 77. 0 L at 18 mmHg to its new volume at standard

3. The air inside a flexible 2.5 L container has a pressure of 110
Kpa. What should the Volume of the container be increased
inorder to decrease the pressure to 620 torr?
4. Convert 338 L at 63.0 atm to its new volume at standard
pressure.
CHARLES’S LAW
In 1787, the French inventor
Jacques Charles, while
investigating the inflation of
his manned hydrogen balloon,
discovered that the Volume of
a gas varied directly with
temperature
Here are the examples of phenomena in our daily
lives that involve changes in the volume of gases
with temperature.
● A basketball left outside on a cold night shrinks
in size.
● Warning signs on a bottle of deodorant indicating
it should be kept away from sunlight and high
temperature.
● The working of a hot air balloon.
Charles’s Law states
that volume is Directly
Proportional to the
temperature at
constant pressure.
How do we calculate
Charles’s law?

V1/T1=V2/T2
V1- Initial Volume
V2- Final Volume
T1- Initial Temperature (In K)
T2- Final Temperature (In K)
SAMPLE PROBLEM:
1. A Cylinder with a movable piston contains
250 cm³ air at 10°C. if the pressure is kept
constant, at what temperature would you
expect the volume to be 150cm³?

2. A tank (not rigid) contains 2.3 L of Helium

Gas at 25°C. what will be the volume of the
tank after heating it and its content to 40°C
temperature at constant pressure?
