At the end of the session, the learners
should be able to:

Identify the different fittings in a

container ship for securing and lashing
and their functions:
Picture analysis:
What is container ships?

Container ships are maritime vessels that carry

cargo containers, also known as intermodal
containers. Sometimes you will hear them called
'box ships' because they carry boxes of cargo.
Container vessels typically operate on a regularly
scheduled set route, this type of shipping service is
known as liner shipping.
Fittings: a small part on or attached to a piece of furniture or equipment.
Fixed fittings – Stacking cones, foundations, deck foundations, lashing
plates, lashing eyes, lashing pots, d-rings. Fixed fittings are integrated
into the hull structure or fitted on double bottom or hatch covers.
Loose fittings – Twistlocks, stackers, bridge fittings, tension/pressure
elements, spanners, lashing rods and turnbuckles.
Securing: fix or attach (something) firmly so that it cannot be moved or
lost.

Lashing: the securing of cargo for transportation, with the goal of
minimizing shifting when in transit. Items used for lashing cargo down
include ropes, cables, wires, strapping, and nets.

Twistlock – A mechanical locking device at the
corner of a container. Conventional twistlocks
are locked and unlocked manually with
operating rods. Rotating the movable part
around a vertical axis locks the device and a
container to a twistlock foundation on a hatch
cover or another container. Reversing the
motion effects unlocking.
Semi-automatic twistlocks are locked
automatically and unlocked manually by the
operating rods. Fully-automatic locks are placed
in the lower corners of the container at the pier.
They lock automatically after the container is
placed on the top, and unlock automatically
when the container is lifted.
What are the three common types of cargo lashing that
are used to secure cargo?

The three common types of cargo lashing that are used

to secure cargo are chain lashing, fixed winches and
web lashing. Tie-downs are used to secure heavy loads
to vehicles with tie-down straps, heavy-duty strapping
or tensioned chains. Lashings and tie-downs use
tension to secure cargo in place.
