Research

YEAR 10 HISTORY
Objective:
Learning Intention: To learn how to research more effectively and find
reliable sources of information

Success Criteria:
◦ Develop search strategies
◦ Know how to use library tools and databases
Effective searches
Every database, search engine and research platform has a different
language.

Adjust your search techniques based on the database/research

platform.

Start with a broad search term then filter your results.

Search strategies
Keywords (the more keywords or specialised keywords you use = narrower/less search
results)

Synonyms (can broaden your search; some databases use specific language/keywords)

Boolean operators help you speak to the database/search tool (BUT every database
speaks a slightly different language). Best place to try these: Google/JSTOR etc.
Boolean operators = AND OR NOT - * ( ) “quotation marks”
Search filters
Filters help narrow your search results.
Search database or research platform uses different filters. Check out the advanced search
settings.

Filter by:
- date
- content/language level
- resource type
