What is Creative Writing?

senses and emotions in
order to create a strong
visual in the readers mind
whereas other forms of
writing typically only
leave the reader with
facts and information
instead of emotional
intrigue.
Imagery and Sensory Experience

1. Visual Imagery – uses words that

appeal to the sense of sight
Ex. The moonlight shone over the
lake and reflected in her big dark
eyes.
2. Auditory Imagery- uses words that appeal to
the sense of hearing.

Ex. She awoke to the chirping of birds and the soft

whisper of the wind as it passed through her
window.
3. Olfactory Imagery – uses words that appeal to
the sense of smell.

Ex. The sweet aroma of the freshly baked cookies

wafted from the kitchen to the living room.
4. Gustatory Imagery – uses words that appeal to
the sense of taste.

Ex. As he bit into the juicy burger, a variety of

spices danced upon his tongue.
5. Tactile Imagery – uses words that appeal to the
sense of touch.

Ex. The tree bark was rough against her skin.
