WHY DID HENRY

notes on
Henry
VIII’s early
life
A RENAISSANCE KING
 Henry grew up during the Renaissance – a time
of new ideas in Europe.
 When Henry became King in 1509, he wanted
to move away from the image of his father
which he thought was very old fashioned
 He wanted to become a Warrior King and win
glory for England against France, although this
was very expensive and often unsuccessful!
 Henry VII had been very cautious with money,
whereas Henry VIII wanted to spend
extravagantly. He threw lavish parties and
spared no expense on celebrations.
• This image is from the
Westminster
Tournament Roll.
• This is a Tapestry that
was made to
commemorate the birth
of Henry VIII's son
born on New Year's Day
in 1511 to his first wife
Catherine of Aragon
(the son shortly died)

What can we learn from

this image?
 This is one of the clearest
images of John Blanke (the
African man
riding the horse) by an
unknown artist, 1511.
 Royal standard is hanging
from the trumpet that he is
playing.

What can this tell us about the role

of Africans in Tudor society?

How does this link to what we have

learned about Tudor Exploration?

Martin Luther
Everyone is Catholic!

Except…
Martin Luther didn’t agree with the fact that the Church gave out
Martin Luther ‘indulgences’ to anyone who would pay for them. This was
essentially buying your way into heaven.

Luther believed that you could get to heaven by just believing in

God and being a good Christian.

In 1517, in Germany, where Luther was from, a friar named

Johann Tetzel began to sell indulgences in Germany to raise
funds to renovate St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Luther said…

“Why doesn’t the pope, whose wealth today is greater than the
wealth of the richest Lord, build the basilica of St. Peter with his
own money rather than with the money of poor believers?”
SPOT THE
DIFFERENCE
Catholic Protestant
The Church should be very rich

The Pope is in charge of the Church

Bible and Church services should be in Latin

 Henry had been married to Catherine
But I would of Aragon for 24 years but she had
also like lots of not given him an heir
money…
 Henry began to think that because
Catherine had been his brother’s
wife, God saw their marriage as
sinful and therefore would not give
them a son.
I WANT A  Henry had also fallen in love with a
woman named Anne Boleyn who
DIVORCE!! had promised him that she would be
able to give him a son.
 The solution?
