Shakespeare’s world- Elizabethan era
• William Shakespeare ( 26 April 1564 – 23 April
1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor,
regarded as the greatest writer in the English
language and the world's greatest dramatist.
• Queen Elizabeth's reign was during the middle of
the Renaissance period(1558-1603). During her
reign, she sent many privateers out, like Sir Francis
Drake, to discover new lands. She supported the
arts. Britain entered the golden age when she was
queen.

• Few people were rich but majority of people


were very poor.
• People did not have the freedom to say their
opinion-this meant treason.
• Life expectancy was little more than 30 years.
• Violence and crime were everyday facts of life.
• Londoners were used to a rich variety of
entertainment: fairs, carnivals etc.

• The most famous theatre in London was ‘The


Globe’
• Women were not allowed to act so boys used
to take the parts of women.
• There was a lot of music and song which
accompanied the play
• It cost about a penny to go in if you wanted a
good view of the stage.
