Concept
• Base ideas of Time and Work

Men Days
if 10 can do a work in 100
2X X 1/2
20 50
1/4 X X4
5 200

So, Time and work are inversely proportional.

(ie) If one increases, the other decreases at the same rate
Introduction
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a piece
of work. In how many days they will complete the work
by working together?

So, A and B together can complete it in 25 days?

No!
Lets consider this - A can build 5 mts wall in a day
- B can build 4 mts wall in a day.
Hence, they can build 9 mts wall in a day.
So, we can do calculation with work but not with time
(i.e) If time is given we have to convert it to work.
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a piece
of work. In how many days they will complete the work
by working together?
Say, Building this house is the work
If A is building it, He can finish it in 10 days

Then what is one day work of A?

1
10 ( 𝑜𝑟 ) 10 % ( 𝑜𝑟 ) 0 .1
But we will stick with fraction because % or decimal will not give us the
exact value always since we will do approximation.
For example, Say A can do a work in 3 days. Then,
1
A’s 1 day work =
3 ( 𝑜𝑟 ) 33.33% ( 𝑜𝑟 ) 0 .33
3
A’s 3 days work =
3 ( 𝑜𝑟 ) 99.99% ( 𝑜𝑟 ) 0 .99
¿1 Not exact values
Fraction will give Exact value So, we will use fraction
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a piece
of work. In how many days they will complete the work
by working together?

Days 1 Day
A – 10 1
10
1
B – 15 15
1 + = =
AB =
10

So, one day A and B together can complete 1/6th of the work
Which means in 6 days they can finish the total work
Alternate method:
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a piece
of work. In how many days they will complete the work
by working together?

Say, Eating chocolates is the work done by A and B

If A is eating it, He can finish the entire box of chocolates in 10 days

If B is eating it, He can finish the entire box of chocolates in 15 days

We don’t know how many chocolates are there inside the box.
So, Let’s assume a number.
Example
Alternate method:
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a
piece of work. In how many days they will complete
the work by working together?

Days 1 day
100
A – 10 10 chocolates
B – 15 chocolates

We don’t need fraction or decimal.

So, Let’s take an easy number for calculation.
Alternate method:
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a
piece of work. In how many days they will complete
the work by working together?
LCM of
Days 1 Day 10 & 15
30 is 30
A – 10 3 chocolates
B – 15 chocolates
A&B 5 chocolates / day

So, for eating 30 chocolates they need (30/5) = 6 days

Alternate method:
A and B take 10 and 15 days respectively to do a
piece of work. In how many days they will complete
the work by working together?
LCM of
Days 1 Day 10 & 15
60 is 30
A – 10 6 chocolates
B – 15 chocolates
A&B 10 chocolates / day

So, for eating 60 chocolates they need (60/10) = 6 days

Example
• A and B take 12 and 20 days respectively to do
a piece of work. A works alone for 3 days. How
many days will B take to complete the
remaining work? LCM of
12 & 20
Days 1 day 60 is 60
A – 12 5 chocolates So, in 3 days 15 choc
B – 20 chocolates
60 – 15 = 45
45/3 = 15 days
So, the remaining chocolates will be eaten by B in
15 days.
Example
A and B take 12 and 20 days respectively to do a
piece of work. They started working together and
B left after 5 days. How many days will A take to
complete the remaining work?
Days 1 Day LCM of
A – 12 5 chocolates 60 12 & 20
is 60
B – 20 chocolates
A&B 8 chocolates / day So, in 5 days 40 choc

Rem  60 – 40 = 20
20/5 = 4 days

So, the remaining work will be done by A in 4 days.

A and B take 12 and 20 days respectively to do a
piece of work. They started working together and
B left after 5 days. How many days will A take to
complete the remaining work?
Days 1 Day If total
A – 12 1 work is 1
12
1
B – 20 20
1 + = =
AB =
12

So, 5 days work = 5 X = =  Work done in 5 days

Remaining work = rd

For completing the Remaining work A will need = 12 X

= 4 days
A takes 10 days to do a piece of work. A & B together
takes 6 days to complete the work. In how many days
B alone will complete the work by working?

Days 1 Day LCM of

A – 10 3 chocolates 30 10 & 6 is
30
B – 15 chocolates

A&B=6 5 chocolates / day

So B can eat 2 choc / day

Then, for eating (total work) 30 chocs = 30/2 = 15 days
A takes 10 days to do a piece of work. A & B together
takes 6 days to complete the work. In how many days
B alone will complete the work by working?

AB A B
1 - = =  B’s 1 day work
6

So, B can finish the work in 15 days

A alone can complete certain work in 12 days, B and C
together can complete the work in 15 days and A and C
together can complete the work in 10 days. B alone can
complete the work in

Days 1 Day LCM of

A – 12 5 chocolates 12, 15 &
60
10 is 60
BC – 15 chocolates
AC – 10 chocolates
B – 20 3 chocolates / day ( BC – C = B )
C – 60 1 chocolate / day ( AC – A = C )

So, B alone can do it in 20 days

A alone can complete certain work in 12 days, B and C
together can complete the work in 15 days and A and C
together can complete the work in 10 days. B alone can
complete the work in
1 day work of,
AC A C
1 - =  C’s 1 day work
10

BC C B
1 - = =  B’s 1 day work
15

So, B can finish the work alone in 20 days

Sohan alone can finish a work in 12 days and Rohan
alone can do it in 18 days. They started working
together but Rohan leaves 5 days before the completion
of the work. In how many days the work got finished?
So, Last 5 days Sohan worked
Days 1 Day
Sohan – 12 3 chocolates LCM of
3 12 & 18
Rohan – 18 chocolates 6
is 36
S&R 5 chocolates / day
5 days  15 chocs
Remaining 21 Chocs
Which should be eaten by both
For 21 chocs both need = 21/5 days = 4.2 days
So, Total work was done in = 5 + 4.2 days = 9.2 days
Sohan alone can finish a work in 12 days and Rohan
alone can do it in 18 days. They started working
together but Rohan leaves 5 days before the completion
of the work. In how many days the work got finished?
So, Last 5 days Sohan worked
1 day work of,

Sohan Rohan S&R

1
12 +
=  S&R’s 1 day work
So, Both can complete the
total work in 36/5 days
5 days work of Sohan
1 of the work can be done in?
12 𝑋5 =
7 36 21
Remaining work = 𝑋 ¿ = 4.2
12 5 5
Which should be done by both
So, total work was done in = 5 + 4.2 days = 9.2 days
A alone can complete a work in 20 days and B alone can
complete it in 15 days. They started working together
and A leaves exactly 10 days before the work is
completed. In how many days the work got completed?
So, Last 10 days B worked
Days 1 Day
A – 20 3 chocolates LCM of
6 20 & 15
B – 15 chocolates 0
is 60
A&B 7 chocolates / day
10 days  40 chocs
Remaining 20 Chocs
Which should be eaten by both
For 20 chocs both need = 20/7 days = 2.85 days
So, Total work was done in = 10 + 2.85 days = 12.85 days
A alone can complete a work in 20 days and B alone can
complete it in 15 days. They started working together
and A leaves exactly 10 days before the work is
completed. In how many days the work got completed?
So, Last 10 days B worked
1 day work of,

A B A&B
1
20 +
=  A&B’s 1 day work
So, Both can complete the
total work in 60/7 days
10 days work of B
1 of the work can be done in?
15 𝑋10 =
1 60 2 0
Remaining work = 𝑋 ¿ = 2.85 days
3 7 7
Which should be done by both
So, total work was done in = 10 + 2.85 days= 12.85 days
A and B can finish a work in 18 days, B and C in 24
days, C and A can finish it in 30 days. Approximately in
how many days can B alone finish the work?

Days 1 Day
A B– 18 20 chocolates LCM of
360 18, 24 &
B C – 24 chocolates
30 is 360
A C – 30 chocolates
2 (ABC) 47 chocolates in 2 days
ABC 23.5 chocolates / day

ABC – AC = B
23.5 – 12 = 11.5
So, B alone can eat 11.5 a day
For total work = 360/11.5 days
A and B can finish a work in 18 days, B and C in 24
days, C and A can finish it in 30 days. Approximately in
how many days can B alone finish the work?

AB = BC = AC =

2(abc)= + + =

ABC =

ABC – AC = - = 1 day  B

B= days
Example
Alternate method:
A, B and C together can do a work in 18 days. They work
together for 2 days and then A leaves. If their rate of work is
equal, in how many days will the remaining work be
completed?
54 3 X 18 = 54
Days 1 day
A–1
3 chocs/day X 2 days = 6
B–1 chocolates
Out of 54, 6 chocs are done,
C–1
Remaining 48
48/2= 24 days
So, the remaining chocolates will be eaten by B & C in 24 days.
Example
A, B and C together can do a work in 18 days. They
work together for 2 days and then A leaves. If their
rate of work is equal, in how many days will the
remaining work be completed?

A B C
Here 2 days of work is done without

Example
A, B and C together can do a work in 18 days. They
work together for 2 days and then A leaves. If their
rate of work is equal, in how many days will the
remaining work be completed?

ABC one day work = A’s one day work =

ABC 2 days work = B and C’s one day work

= =
T
So, B and C can complete the full
work in 27 days
Then
B and C needs x 27 = 24 days
Example

completed?
108 6 X 18 = 108
Days 1 day
A–1
6 chocs/day X 3 days = 18
B–2 chocolates
Out of 108, 18 chocs are done,
C–3
Remaining 90
90/5= 18 days
So, the remaining chocolates will be eaten by B & C in 18 days.
Alternate method:
A, B and C together can do a work in 18 days. They work

Example
The ratio of the capacity to do a work, of A and B
is 3 : 2. If they together can complete a work in 18
days, how long would A take to complete the
work alone?
90
1 day
A–3 B–2
In 18 days they will finish the work
5 chocolates
So, in 18 days they will eat 18 X 5= 90 choc

If A can eat 3 chocs in a day, A can finish the total

work of 90 chocs in 30 days.
Example
The ratio of the time taken to do a work, of A and
B is 3 : 2. If they together can complete a work in
18 days, how long would A take to complete the
work alone?
Since time & work are inversely proportional to each other
Time ratio We just have to invert to convert into work ratio
A B
Work ratio

In 18 days they will finish the work
Work ratio So, in 18 days they will eat 18 X 5 = 90 choc
A B
If A can eat 2 chocs in a day, A can finish
2 3 the total work of 90 chocs in 45 days.
5 chocolates
Example
A takes 9 days to do a work. B is 50 % more
efficient than A. How many days will they
together take to complete the work?
If A can eat 100 chocs, Then B can eat? 150 chocs
Work ratio
A B 36
Days 1 day
100 : 150
2 : 3 A - 9 4 choco
B - 6 6 choco
Time Ratio A and B 10 choco
A : B
3 : 2 A and B can finish 36 chocos in 3.6 days
9 days : 6 days
Example
George can do some work in 8 hours, Paul can do the same work in 10
hours while Hari can do the same work in 12 hours. All the three of them
start working at 9 a.m while George stops work at 11 a.m and remaining
two complete the work. Approximately at what time will the work be
finished?

Hours 1 Hour 120 LCM of 8,

G–8 15 chocolates 10 & 12 is
P – 10 chocolates 120
So, in 2 hrs = 2 x 37 = 74
H – 12 chocolates
GPH 37 chocos Remaining is = 46

Now P & H needs = 46/22 hrs to finish it

That is = 2(1/11) hrs
So aprox 1 pm they will finish the work
Example
A, B and C can finish a work in 10, 12 and 15 days respectively. C starts the
work and after 1 day B joins him. After one day of B, A also joins but leaves
before 3 days of completion of work while B leaves 2 days before
completion of work. What is the total number of days taken to complete
the work?

Days 1 day 60 LCM of 10

A – 10 6 chocolates 12 & 15 is
B – 12 chocolates
C – 15
60
chocolates
Say total work was completed in X days

A B C
6 (X-5) + 5 (X-3)
+ X
=4 60
X=7
Example
Jack can complete a work in 16 days and Joseph can do the same work in
32 days. Jack, Joseph and James start doing the work together. After 4 days,
Jack leaves. Joseph and James complete the remaining work in 8 more
days. Find the time in which James can complete the work by working
alone.

Days 1 day
64
Jack = 16 4 chocolates
Joseph= 32 2 chocolates
Joseph= 2 per day = 64/2 = 32 days
James = 32 X chocolates = 2
James = x per day
(4+2+x) Choc = ( 2+x ) per day

4 X (4+2+x) + 8 X (2+X) = 64
X=2

So James can eat 2 chocs a day Then, 64 chocs in = 64/2 = 32 days

Example
20 workers can finish a work in 30 days. After how many days
should 5 workers leave the job so the work is completed in 35 days?

For example,
if 1 worker can eat 1 chocolate in one day
Then 20 workers will eat 20 chocolates in a day 600
In 30 days they will eat 600 chocolates. (Total work)
- 525 = 75
Any way the remaining 15 workers worked for 35 days.
Then they finished 525 chocolates

Out of 600 chocolates 525 is done

Remaining chocolates is 75
Which is eaten by the 5 workers who left in the middle, They can eat 5 chocos in a day

They need 75/5= 15 days to finish it.

So, they left after 15 days
Example
30 men can do a work in 24 days. In how many days can 20 men do
the work, given the time spent per day is increased by 1/3 of the
previous time?
For example,
if 1 man can eat 1 chocolate in one day
Then 30 men can eat 30 chocolates in a day 720
In 24 days they will eat 24 X 30 = 720 chocolates. (Total work)

If time spent per day is increased by 1/3rd .

Then 1 man can eat 1(1/3) chocs per day

Now we have 20 men, they can eat 20 X 1(1/3) chocs a day = 80/3 chocs
For eating 720 chocs they need days
= 27 days
A and B take 20 and 25 days respectively to do a piece of
work. Doing that work together they get an amount of
Rs 1350. What is the share of B in that amount?

Days 1 day
LCM of
A – 20 5 chocolates 100 10 & 15
B – 25 chocolates is 30

So, Their time ratio is = 20 : 25  4 : 5

And Work ratio is  5 : 4

Wages have to be divided according to their work.

So, Rs.1350 will be divided in the ratio 5 : 4
Then B’s share = ?
A, B and C contract a work for Rs. 550. Together, A and B
are supposed to do 7/11 of the work. How much does C
get ?

If A and B did 7/11th of the work.

Then C will do ?
4/11th of the work

For 4/11th of work. C will receive 4/11th of the amount.

So, 550 X = 200 Rs

Two men undertake to do a piece of work for Rs. 200. One
alone could do it in 6 days, the other in 8 days. With the
assistance of a boy they finish it in 3 days. How should the
money be divided?
Time 1 day
LCM of 6,
M1 - 6 4 chocolates 24 8 & 3 is 24
M2 - 8 chocolates
B - 24 chocolates

ALL - 3 chocolates

The amount should be divided according to their work efficiency.

The work ratio is 4 : 3 : 1.
So, 200 should be divided in the ratio 4 : 3 : 1.
M1 : M2 : B
100 : 75 : 25
A and B undertook to do a piece of work for RS 4500. A alone
could do the work in the 8 days and B in 12 Days. With the
assistance of C, they finished the work in 4 days. How should
the money be divided?
Time 1 day
LCM of 8,
A - 8 3 chocolates 24 12 & 4 is 24
B - 12 chocolates
C - 24 chocolates

ALL - 4 chocolates

The amount should be divided according to their work efficiency.

The work ratio is 3 : 2 : 1.
So, Rs.4500/- should be divided in the ratio 3 : 2 : 1.
A : B : C
2250 : 1500 : 750
