“Lines Written in Early Spring”
I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined, The birds around me hopped and
In that sweet mood when pleasant played,
thoughts Their thoughts I cannot measure:—
Bring sad thoughts to the mind. But the least motion which they made
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.
To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran; The budding twigs spread out their
And much it grieved my heart to think fan,
What man has made of man. To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
Through primrose tufts, in that green That there was pleasure there.
bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths; If this belief from heaven be sent,
And ’tis my faith that every flower If such be Nature’s holy plan,
Enjoys the air it breathes. Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?
“The Daffodils”
I wandered lonely as a cloud The waves beside them danced; but
That floats on high o'er vales and they
hills, Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
When all at once I saw a crowd, A poet could not but be gay,
A host, of golden daffodils; In such a jocund company:
Beside the lake, beneath the trees, I gazed—and gazed—but little
Fluttering and dancing in the thought
breeze. What wealth the show to me had
brought:
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way, For oft, when on my couch I lie
They stretched in never-ending In vacant or in pensive mood,
line They flash upon that inward eye
Along the margin of a bay: Which is the bliss of solitude;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance, And then my heart with pleasure fills,
Tossing their heads in sprightly And dances with the daffodils.
