Dance: Choreographing and Performing
● This unit is a dance unit
○ Focus on choreographing

Learning Objectives

Over a four-week unit, students will identify various dance moves, practice these dance moves both themselves and digitally. Students
will be introduced how to choreograph a dance and will use this to choreograph their own dance. Students will also be introduced to
coding, the basics to blockchain coding, and how to code a dance in the game Dance Party 2019.

1. Students will be able to identify 11 basic dance moves.

2. Students will practice the 11 dance moves to gain a better understanding of each dance movement.
3. Students will be introduced to Dance Party 2019. Students will complete the basic code introduction with the teacher.
4. Students will perform a basic code task on their own in order to gain an understanding of coding, how to sequence code, and
how to make a character dance in the game Dance Party 2019.
5. Students will choreograph a dance for a performance performed by their persons and/or their character in the game Dance Party
2019.

● Digital Game-Based Learning

● Meaningful Gamification
Game and Game Integration

● Students create a definition of what it means to choreograph, they record this

definition on paper
Game and Game Integration

● Students practice the dance moves from the game Dance Party 2019
● They do this in person, not on the computer
Game and Game Integration

● Students complete the introduction to coding activity

● This will teach them how to code a character in the game to perform a dance
or dance sequence

● There are 11 levels for the students to work through

Game and Game Integration

● Students complete the Dance Party Level up worksheet to indicate how many
tries each level took them

Students choreograph a dance

Students record the dance on a worksheet and then code the dance for their
character to perform. Students also practice the dance in person.
Game and Game Integration

Final lesson and final project

○ In Person
○ Through their character
○ A duet with their character
Unit Outline
Game Theories Integrated

Digital Game-Based Learning

● The game acted as a tool for students to learn how to choreograph
● “Weaved” game play and instruction
● Gave students an alternative reality
Game Theories Integrated
Meaningful Gamification
● Scott Nicholson “recipe”
○ 6 elements
● #1 play
○ Students are given a chance to explore and fail during the introduction coding
○ They have a chance to explore creative dance movements, work out which they like or dont like, figure out the steps to each
dance movement
● #2 exposition
○ Students get to create their own “stories”
○ They become immersed in an alternate reality while coding
○ Becoming a choreographer
● #3 Choice
○ Students have the choice to choose the music, dance moves, sequence of code, and final project
● #4 information
○ Students use the game and the real-world setting to develop a deeper understanding of what it means and takes to choreograph
● #5 and #6 engagement and reflection
○ Students have options to work with peers
○ They have can provide feedback to each other
○ Compare definitions
○ Cruiteque peers performance
○ Finally, perform a choreographed dance for their peers
