EXPLAIN
.

CHEMICAL DIGESTION

*Chemical digestion is a complex process that reduces food into its

chemical building blocks, which are then absorbed to nourish the
cells of the body.

*The main places where chemical digestion happens are the mouth,
stomach and small intestine.
ELABORATE
SALIVARY GLANDS
*Surrounding the mouth are 3 sets of salivary glands.

*The salivary glands are accessory organs that produce a watery secretion known as saliva.

* Saliva helps to moisten food and begins the digestion of carbohydrates.

*The body also uses saliva to lubricate food as it passes through the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus.
ENZYME

*Enzyme: A substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a
specific biochemical reaction.

*Salivary glands produce the enzyme Amylase.

*Salivary glands in our mouth generate salivary amylase that starts the process of digestion by

breaking down starch and converting into maltose and smaller carbohydrate.
EVALUATE
*Why chemical digestion is important?

*What are Enzymes?

*Name the different salivary glands.

*Name the enzyme produced by salivary glands.

*What is the function of the enzyme produced by salivary glands?
