Descriptive Statistics

• It is the term given to the analysis of data that help

describe, show, or summarize data in a meaningful
way.
• Descriptive Statistics do not, however, allow us
to make conclusions beyond the data we have
analyzed or reach conclusions regarding any
hypotheses we might have made. They are
simply a way to describe our data.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS:
PERCENTAGE
PERCENTAGE
STATISTICS
Frequency and percentage statistics should be used to represent most
personal information variables (e.g. age, gender, marital status, etc.).

It is oftentimes difficult to interpret frequency distributions because the

frequency by itself is meaningless unless there is a reference point to
interpret the number.
PERCENTAGE
STATISTICS
Example:
Assume the following data:
Total participants = 250
Single participants = 140
Married participants = 55
Separated participants = 35
Widowed participants = 20

% = (frequency ÷ total sample) x 100%

Single participants = (140 ÷ 250) x 100% = 56%

Married participants = (55 ÷ 250) x 100% = 22%
Separated participants = (35 ÷ 250) x 100% = 14%
Widowed participants = (20 ÷ 250) x 100% = 8%

At this point, a simple table with the frequency and Percentage of personal information variables will suffice.
