What Is a Pal?

(Lesson 1 )
Vocabulary Words and Definitions
•The vocabulary cards in this bundle are for students to practice using their vocabulary words
from the story, “What Is a Pal?”. We have included the three categories of “Target
Vocabulary” included in the “Scope and Sequence” for Journeys (Selection Vocabulary, Oral
Vocabulary, and Domain-Specific Vocabulary,). Although the cards are all the same color
( denoting “vocabulary words” ) They are also marked with the letter “S” for “Selection
Vocabulary”, “O” for “Oral Vocabulary,” and “D” for “Domain Specific Vocabulary”.

Here are some ways you can use these vocabulary cards and definitions:

1. The “matching game” where the cards and definitions are face down and they have to
remember where each card is to match the word with the definition
2. Draw a picture to match the word and its destination.
3. Use the words in written and oral sentences correctly.
4. Play “charades” with the words.
5. Find the word in the story and point to it while working with a buddy. Have the two
students discuss the meaning of the word.

•These vocabulary words cards can be used in a center, a small group, or independently.

•Just print, laminate, and cute so you can use these cards over and over. They can also be
printed in grayscale if there is no color printer available.
