(Allamanda cathartica)
PETAL EXTRACT: Potential
Cell Growth Blocker
Introduction
Globally, there were an estimated 20 million new
cases of cancer and 10 million deaths from cancer.
Cancer is now the third leading cause of death
nationwide, with lung cancer ranking number one in
mortality.
Introduction
Yellow Bell (Allamanda cathartica) is a vigorous,
smooth, slightly hairy shrub growing 2 to 4 meters
high.
Phytochemical screening of stems, leaves, and
flowers of Allamanda cathartica yielded tannins,
flavonoids, terpenes, anthraquinones, cardiac
glycosides, and the absence of alkaloids in all three
parts.
Introduction
The study was conducted to determine the cell
growth blocker factor of Yellow Bell on germinated
Mung Beans and may serve as the basis for the
development of herbal and/or synthetic medicines
which will be affordable and can help patients suffering
from cancer or other serious illnesses.

Results and Discussions
Table 1 presents the daily development of
germinated Mung beans in three setups with A.
cathartica extract with water within 3 days.

with Water
Results revealed that in Setup A among 30
germinated seeds, there was no improvement after Day
3 of observation, the extract was absorbed by the beans
or maybe evaporated and the beans started to shrink
reducing their normal size, while in Setup B, Mung
beans with water increase its germination size.
One seed in each dish has a length of 2cm. on Day
1, 3cm. on Day 2, and 4cm. on Day 3. An average
growth of 1 centimeter per day in each dish was
significantly visible.
Suppressing the growth of cells shown when the
beans shrank from their original size, indicates that
Yellow Bell has the capacity of inhibiting its cell
growth activity.
The daily hydration of 5ml A. cathartica extract did
not guarantee the development of Mung bean, instead,
it hardens its seeds as if going back to its raw size.
Conclusions
Allamanda cathartica has beneficial effects on
humans as it helps delay or block the growth of
abnormal cells. There is a significant shrinkage in the
germinated Mung Beans when applied with A.
cathartica extract.
The growth-blocking effect is a big advantage to
patients suffering from cancer-related illnesses since it
can shrink and suppress cells that are growing.
It has significant phytochemical components that
target the cell growth factor of abnormal cells. This
project concludes that A. cathartica can inhibit cell
growth activity.
