The Federal Highway Administration

collected data on mean stop times from
three types of signals on suburban streets:
(1) pretimed, (2) semi-actuated, and (3)
fully actuated. Five intersections were
randomly selected for installing each type
of signal. Test if the mean stopping times
at the three types of signals are the same.

Pretimed 36.6 39.2 30.4 37.1 32.1

Semi-actuated 17.5 20.6 18.7 25.7 22
Fully Actuated 15 10.4 18.9 10.5 15.2
2. Three thermometers are used regularly in a
certain laboratory. To check the relative
accuracies, they are randomly and
independently placed in a cell kept at zero
degrees Celsius. Each thermometer is placed
in the cell four times, with the following
results:
1 0.1 0.9 -0.8 -0.2
2 -0.2 0.8 -0.3 0.6
3 0.9 0.2 0.3 -0.3
Are there significant differences among the
means for the three thermometers? Test at
0.05 level of significance.
3. Four chemical treatments for fabric are to
be compared with regard to their ability to
resist stains. Two different types of fabric
are available for the experiment, so it is
decided to apply each chemical to a sample
of each of type of fabric. The result is
randomized block design with four
treatments and two blocks. The
measurements(resistance scores) are listed
below. Is there evidence of significant
differences among the mean resistance
scores for the chemicals? Is blocking
effective?
  Treatment (Chemical)
  Resistance Score

Block
(Fabric) 1 2 3 4 Means
1 5 3 8 4 5
2 9 8 13 6 9
Means 7 5.5 10.5 5 7
4. A chemist runs an experiment to study the
effects of four treatments on the glass
transition temperature of a particular
polymer compound. Raw material used to
make this polymer is bought in small
batches. Therefore, each treatment was run
on samples from each batch; with the results
shown in the table (temperature in K).
a. Do the data provide sufficient evidence to
indicate a difference in mean temperature
among the four treatments?
b. Is there sufficient evidence to indicate a
difference in the mean temperature among
the three batches?
Treatment

Batch 1 2 3 4

1 576 584 562 543

2 515 563 522 536

3 562 555 550 530

5. The yield percentage Y of a chemical
process depends on the temperature at
which the process is run and the length of
time the process is active. For two levels of
temperature and two lengths of time, the
yields are listed in the table below: Perform
an ANOVA for interaction. If interaction is
significant, determine the differences lie.
  Temperature
Time Low High
Low 24 28
  45 30
High 26 23
  28 22
6. In analyzing coal samples for ash content,
two types of crucibles and three
temperatures were used in a complete
factorial arrangement.
  Crucible
Temperature Steel Silica
825 8.7 7.2 9.3 9.1
875 9.4 9.6 9.7 9.8
925 10.1 10.2 10.4 10.7

Perform an ANOVA, conducting appropriate

tests at the 5% significance level. Does there
appear to be a difference between the two
types of crucible with respect to average ash
content?
