There are two Americas. One is America of

Lincoln and Adlai Stevenson; the other is the
America of Teddy Roosevelt and the modern super-
patriots. One is generous and humane, the other
narrowly egotistical; one is self-critical, the other self-
righteous; one is sensible, the other romantic; one is
good-humored, the other solemn; one is inquiring,
the other pontificating; one is moderate, the other
filled with passionate intensity; one is judicious and
the other arrogant in the use of great power.

My academic career almost ended as soon as it began

when, three weeks after I arrived at college, I decided to pledge
a fraternity. By midterms I was wearing a straw hat and saying
“Yes, sir” to every fraternity brother I met. When classes were
over I ran errands for the fraternity members, and after dinner I
socialized and worked on projects with the other people in my
pledge class. In between these activities I tried to study.
Somehow I managed to write papers, take tests, and attend
lectures. By the end of the semester, though, my grades had
slipped I was exhausted. It was then that I began to ask myself
some important questions. I realized that I wanted to be
popular, but not at the expense of my grades and my future
career. At the beginning of my second semester I dropped out
of fraternity and got a job in the biology lab. Looking back, I
realize that it was then that I actually began to grow up.
