    Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Septic shock is a subset of sepsis and is present when circulatory and metabolic abnormalities are severe enough to substantially increase mortality. Patients with suspected infection who are likely to have a prolonged ICU stay or die in the hospital can be identified at the bedside using quick SOFA (qSOFA) criteria which includes a respiratory rate above 22/min, altered mental status, or a systolic blood pressure below 100 mmHg.
